"Young Adam" directed by David Mackenzie (2003)

Based on the novel by Scottish writer Alexander Trocchi, Young Adam is the story of Joe, a man who lands a job aboard a barge that functions from Glasgow, Scotland. Working and living on the barge with Les, his wife Ella, and their young son Jim, among cramped quarters it is almost inevitable for Joe to start noticing Ella in a new light. When their love affair begins to unravel among flashbacks of Joe's relationship with a girl who has been pulled dead from the icy river waters, all bets are off and the lives of everyone involved will be changed forever.

Tilda Swinton and Ewan McGregor were both nominated in the categories of Best Actor and Best Actress in a Scottish Film by BAFTA Scotland, along with a Best Director award to David Mackenzie. This film proves very faithful to the novel, which makes for an unpretentious and down to earth adaptation. For any fan of Tilda Swinton's work, "Young Adam" is certainly one to keep an eye out for.
