i lost my hair when i was ten. it was easy to cover up to the people who didn't know me and wouldn't have noticed a difference in how i looked. i wore a wig or headwraps for 14 years straight, in front of all but 3 or 4 people. i remember one day in college when i walked out to a field near the school, in the south loop of chicago. the wind was blowing and as i walked into the center of that field alone, after about 12 years of covering up to any and everyone who knew me, i was nervous and determined. with only a few books, a reel of a short film and change-filled pockets, i sat down in the middle of that field, inhaled a deep breath, and took off my wig. the wind felt new, the air felt new, the grass moved gently to beckon the coming breeze. i was alone, enjoying my oasis during windy city lunch hours. sidewalks lined the island of my field and people walked swiftly to their next appointments. no one turned their heads. no one laughed or judged. there was not some earth-shattering break in the daily routines of the people in my city. it was just me, in a field, as i am, allowed to be. honest. in public. as more than a face with aspirations. hidden in plain view amongst my peers and future friends. out in the open, open myself, silent and in bliss. i am forever appreciative of that time, of those 15 minutes. giving myself an opportunity to feel the relief of letting my guard down... of taking my wall apart piece by piece and feeling its elements drift away. let someone else use these bricks, these defenses, these disguises. they served me until they did not serve me any more. "And i do not give pause to approved public demands... but appealed wrongful applause and now i live in exceptional hands." ~Alexandrah #BreakingThe4THWall
she's so uplifting and a sensational artist!
This is one of my favorite underground Hip-Hop groups from Orlando, FL. Amazing production, lyrics, and live it is one of the most amazing shows I have ever been to. They keep underground true to form within the style and feel of their music; as well as express Political and Cultural/Societal Conflicts within their penetrating and profound lyrics. They also produce some very appealing street art when they are not performing. Check them out at www.solilla.com
