their senior year was fast approaching, and the girls were positive of one thing: they could never be as young or untouchable as this summer, no matter how hard they begged the universe to exist as seventeen-year-olds forever. so, in an attempt to protect each other from the fears of inescapable adulthood, they spent the entire summer with each other, making sure to share secrets, sunglasses, and everything in between. there were few nights where they didn’t fall asleep to the sound of their own laughter, and even fewer mornings where they didn’t wake up thinking of one another.
in a way, it worked. for by the end of the summer, there was another thing they undoubtedly understood: no matter how many years would pass, or how far apart they would drift, their youth together would always rest comfortably in the unfaltering summers they shared, and that certainty alone made growing up seem all the less lonelier.
