Character: Dean Winchester (written from Dean’s POV)
---
May 11, I’m getting married today. That sentence is on repeat in my mind. Everything is a blur. It’s 4p.m. and the wedding is at 5p.m. I haven’t seen Ally since this morning because she says its bad luck. Cas, Dave, Richard and Sam are sitting around me catching up, but I can’t think of anything except that fact that I’m getting married. Cricket starts crying, so I absent-mindedly get up and grab her from the crib. I soothe her crying and change the dirty diaper. Sitting back down next to Sam, I rest her against my chest and she falls back asleep.
“Working man now, Dean,” Sam comments, “a kiddo, dog…Who thought you’d be the one with the apple pie life.”
“Yeah,” I say, not sure what else to respond with.
“You boys ought to get ready,” Richard says.
He, Cas, and Dave are already in their tuxes. Sam and I have yet to get dressed. There’s a knock on the door of the library before Daisy, Ally’s best friend and maid of honor, walks in.
“As suspected. Dean, Sam, Ally says if you’re not ready by the time the wedding starts, she’ll skin both of you,” Daisy says promptly before leaving again.
I look at Sam and hand Cricket to Cas. He cradles her in his arms. I kiss her forehead and we go into my bedroom to get our tuxes on. We dress silently.
“Are you okay, Dean?” Sam asks.
“Course,” I say, trying to shrug him off. No dice.
“Dean, I may have moved away six months ago, but you’re still my brother. I know you like the back of my hand. What’s going on?”
“I’m just nervous as hell. There are so many ways I can screw this up. Speaking of…” I open the bedroom door slightly. “Ajax! Ajax, get over here!”
“Ally named the dog Ajax?” Sam asks.
“Uh…No. I named him Ajax,” I reply.
“You’ve changed Dean,” Sam says, seriously. I look over at him, confused and worried. “For the better. This will be great for you, you know, having Jensen and Ally. Especially since I’m gone now.”
I nod. My throat is tight, or maybe it’s the tux. I put on the turquoise tie and begin looping it into a Windsor. Sam quickly begins to tie his as well. I watch, and remember the first time I taught Sam how to tie a tie. Some sixth grade dance what seems like a million years ago. We used one of Dad’s spare business suit ties.
“Jenna Kristie,” I recall.
“What?” Sam asks, looking over to meet my eyes. I clear my throat.
“Jenna Kristie,” I say again.
“Wh-Oh,” Sam finally recalls the name. “What about her?”
“First time I taught you how to tie a tie. Going to the dance with Jenna Kristie.”
Sam laughs and looks at his watch. I automatically glance at mine. Twenty minutes before I need to be standing under the archway. To get married. My brain reminds me. There is a knock on the door. Sam answers it as I corral Ajax again to put his bow-tie on. Ally will love this.
“Hey, sweet Jensen,” I hear him coo. “Cas has to go help Kat get the final decorations set up in the clearing. Also, something about a pair of scissors?”
“Oh, right,” I respond, finding a pair of scissors in the night stand. “Okay. I think we’re ready. Let’s head down there.”
We get to the clearing in the woods. The chairs are set up with the tables ready to move in on the sides. The archway is decorated with lilies and roses. The speakers and sound table is set up off to the side. Kat is flitting around with Becca and Serenity, their bridesmaid dresses flowing in the soft wind, getting the final decorations set up. Cas is helping with the last strand of lights. Sam rocks Cricket back and forth, her giggles floating through the air. Ajax yodels at Sam from the ground.
“There you are! Dean, do you have a pair of scissors?” Kat asks, running over to me, her dress fluttering in the wind.
“Here you go,” I say, handing them over.
“Bec!” She yells. Becca runs over with a bouquet of flowers, and hands them to Kat. She proceeds to hide the pair of scissors in the bouquet. I watch, amused.
“I’m missing something here,” Sam says, bouncing Cricket on his hip.
“It’s good luck!” Kat and Becca reply simultaneously.
“I think that’s everything,” Kat confirms. “Let’s get this show on the road—Wait! Scrub cap, Becca?”
“I got it, I got it,” She responds, handing Kat a piece of cloth which she then sticks down her dress front.
Kat begins herding everyone into their positions. I watch from the side as our few but cherished guests are seated. I move to the back with the bridesmaids and groomsmen and Kat makes her way to the sound table. The strands of lights fade on and suddenly my heart is in my throat, beating wildly. The processional song starts to play, a ukulele version of Here Come the Sun.
“Dean!” Charlie whispers, suddenly beside me with her book.
My eyes are transfixed on the archway; it suddenly occurs to me that I’m supposed to be walking toward it. I loop my arm in Charlie’s and walk up the aisle; my hands are sweaty and my heart is still threatening to cut off my air supply. Charlie stands in the center of the archway, and I stand off to my side. Sam comes down the aisle next, one arm looped in Serenity’s and holding my little Cricket in the other. They split and each stand off to one side. As Becca and Cas walk down the aisle, Sam leans toward me.
“Are you gonna pass out? Cause you look like you’re gonna pass out,” Sam whispers.
“It’s up for debate,” I hiss. Cas stands next to Sam and Becca next to Serenity; Daisy is now walking down the aisle with Richard. They split, Daisy standing in the maid of honor spot, and there she is.
She’s positively breathtaking and the sight of my future bride instantly calms my erratic heart. She’s here, walking down the aisle toward me. Her bouquet is also made of lilies and roses, matching the archway. The white dress is elegant and fits her perfectly. My knees are weak and I know my mouth is hanging open, but I can’t process anything through my mind as her hair flutters lightly. She hands her bouquet to Daisy and holds her hand out to me. I take it in mine and look to Charlie. The song fades away and Charlie speaks up.
“Welcome everyone! We are gathered here today to join Dean and Ally as they begin their journey together in marriage. Marriage is what brings us together today. Marriage, that blessed arrangement, that dream within a dream. And love, true love, will follow you forever, so treasure your love. For them, out of the routine of un-ordinary life, the extraordinary has happened. They met each other, fell in love and are finalizing it with their wedding. A good marriage must be created. It is never being too old to hold hands. It’s remembering to say I love you every day and it is not just marrying the right person its being the right partner. Dean, would you begin by saying your vows to Ally?”
I stare at her for a moment, into her eyes. They are already shining with tears. I lick my lips, swallow and clear my throat. Thankfully, my brain turns the auto-pilot on and I recite the words I’ve been rehearsing for months.
“I promise to encourage your compassion, because that is what makes you unique and wonderful. I promise to nurture your dreams, because through them your soul shines. I promise to help shoulder our challenges, for there is nothing we cannot face if we stand together. I promise to be your partner in all things, not possessing you, but working with you as a part of the whole. I promise to protect you from the evils of the world, so that our family may live in peace. Lastly, I promise to you perfect love and perfect trust, for one lifetime with you could never be enough. This is my sacred vow to you, my equal in all things," I recite, a tear leaking out of my eye halfway through.
“Ally, would you say your vows to Dean?” Charlie continues.
“I believe in you, the person you will grow to be and the couple we will be together. With my whole heart, I take you as my husband, acknowledging and accepting your faults and strengths, as you do mine. I promise to be faithful and supportive and to always make our family's love and happiness my priority. I will be yours in plenty and in want, in sickness and in health, in failure and in triumph. I will dream with you, celebrate with you and walk beside you through whatever our lives may bring. You are my person, my love and my life, today and always,” She said, through free-falling tears.
“Dean Eric Winchester do you take Alexis Nicole to be your Wife?” Charlie asks.
“I do,” I respond, breath hitching.
“Do you promise to love, honor, cherish and protect her, forsaking all others and holding only unto her?”
“I do.”
“Alexis Nicole do you take Dean Eric Winchester to be your Husband?”
“I do,” She chokes out.
“Do you promise to love, honor, cherish and protect him, forsaking all others and holding only unto him?”
“I do.”
“It is time to bless and exchange the rings,” Charlie says, turning to Sam who is still rocking Cricket back and forth. Sam shakes his head. I whistle.
Ajax trots down the aisle in his bowtie, and Charlie takes the small bag from his mouth. Ajax sits down between us and looks at us as though he’s actually interested in what’s happening.
“Wedding rings are an unbroken circle of love, signifying to all the union of this couple in marriage."
“Alexis Nicole, this ring is my sacred gift, with my promise that I will always love you, cherish you and honor you all the days of my life. And with this ring, I thee wed,” I stammer; I take the ring from Charlie and put it on Ally’s finger.
“Dean Eric Winchester, this ring is my sacred gift, with my promise that I will always love you, cherish you and honor you all the days of my life. And with this ring, I thee wed,” She says, taking the other ring from Charlie and putting in on my finger.
“By the power vested in me I now pronounce you husband and wife!” Charlie exclaims and turns to me. “You may kiss your bride!”
I pull Ally to me and kiss her, throwing all of my feelings into the kiss.
“I present to you our happy couple!” Charlie cries, tossing a confetti bomb into the air above us. Glittery confetti rains down on all of us.
All I Want is You begins playing and we all proceed back down the aisle as Kat and a few people of her choice begin converting the field into a dance area, with tables and chairs skirting the edge. The food and drinks table are set up, along with the wedding cake. Ally runs off to speak with Daisy and I take a moment and stare at the event unfurling around me. The guys from Drennen Automotive are here, along with Balthazar. A few of Kat’s friends are here, as well as quite a few of Ally and Daisy’s. Balthazar makes his way over to me, a glass of champagne in his hand.
“Congratulations, Winchester,” He says, taking a sip.
“Thanks,” I reply, nodding.
“I assume you know the whole ‘take care of my sister or I’ll kill you’ mumbo jumbo?” He questions jokingly.
“Wouldn’t have it any other way,” I joke back.
He downs the rest of the glass as he walks away. I stare around at everyone, the silent urge egging me on. I’ve been sober for five months, and six months before my last binge. Seeing everyone around me drinking heightens all the senses, the need. My breathing quickens and my heart constricts. I clench and unclench my hands for something to do as I’m rooted to the spot.
“Dean?”
I blink. Ally’s there, holding Cricket, and Ajax is dancing at her feet yodeling. Waves of relief wash through my body as I take in my family. Sam is next to me suddenly, an arm wrapped around Serenity’s waist. My muscles relax, and a smile spreads on my face. The dance playlist begins. I take my babbling Cricket from Ally and hold her close.
“She’s so cute!” Serenity says. “What’s her full name again?”
“Jensen Valan Winchester, but we call her Cricket,” Ally responds.
“Let’s go have our first dance, Princess,” I say, grabbing my wife and heading to the dance area with Cricket.
Everyone dances the night away and when it’s time, Serenity is the one who catches the bouquet. I give Sam a knowing grin that he elbows me for. I wrap my arm around his neck and pull him close. Cas suddenly has his arms around both of us.
“This. Is an excellent party,” He says, slightly drunken.
“Cas, where the hell is Cricket?” I ask, appalled.
“Mmm…Balthazar,” He says, dropping into a seat close by.
I get up and move through the crowd, Balthazar is chatting up Kat, who is wearing a ferry boat scrub cap and looks unimpressed.
“Balt!” I bark, grabbing his attention. “Where’s my daughter?”
“Hmm…The big oaf of a man took her from me,” He says, turning back to Kat.
I grab his shoulders, turning him back toward me. Fear and adrenaline are coursing through my veins.
“Who. Has. Her?” I snarl.
“Calm down there, Dean, I got her,” Richard interjects. He’s cradling a sleeping Cricket in his arms.
I walk away from Balthazar with Richard and we chat for awhile, watching from the edge of the party. Ally turns slowly on the dance floor and catches my eye. My heart speeds up momentarily and I’m transfixed by her. It is at this moment I know that everything will be okay, because Ally is there and she’s never leaving.
