Alex Ross Perry - Her Smell (2019) Well that wasn't an easy watch. I am sure this is going to be one of those love it or hate it films for most people and that seems to be the general opinion I've heard around. I quite liked it, really. The film stars Elisabeth Moss who is never less than great and has had a long working relationship with the film's director, as a rock star in a downward spiral, it's hard not to think slightly of Courtney Love, for example, when watching it. When the film begins Moss's character, Becky Something, has clearly lost the plot although it is unclear if she ever had the plot to begin with. The way Ross Perry quite literally underscores the scenes of manic chaos with a constant droning sound and noise creates a feeling of unease only made even more stressful by the scenes of degradation, violence and abuse that you see on screen. The second half of the film is substantially more sedate and this comes as a relief to your own nerves, only to again build up a sense of uncertainty towards the end. Alex Ross Perry and Elisabeth Moss take you on a tour with this character of Becky, she starts off as a insufferable entitled rock star that you just want to slap and by the end of the film you really want her to be successful. A complete indictment of the kind of films that glamorize rock-star life and a great character study with a stellar cast. There.
