The game I backed on Kickstarter over a year ago finally arrived! Its the first Kickstarter I ever backed, and its awesome to hold something that in some very small way I was a part of. I actually gave some feedback for the rulebook, and the designer did rename the main phase to deployment phase, which I suggested. :)
The game is called Algomancy, by the way. The designer, Caleb Gannon, is an avid Magic the Gathering player (he uploads a lot of videos of him drafting Mtg on his youtube channel), and Algomancy evolved out of him making his own cube. He also has a PhD in mathematics, which is very fitting, since the inventor of Mtg, Richard Garfield, also has a PhD in mathematics. Honestly, I could see a world were I end up doing game design years after completing my own PhD in mathematics.
I'm really looking forward to playing it. It sports quite a few design innovations, like parallelized gameplay with shared turns, and drafting during play, rather than before. The game also has a strong focus on combining simpler cards into complex engines, which is super cool.
The biggest downside of Algomancy is that any day on which my playgroup plays it will be a day where we don't play Mtg cube. Maybe we can squeeze in one game of Algomancy on an Mtg cube day. It will certainly take much less time than our multiplayer cube, where a single game can take 3 hours.
