Over the weekend, I got a chance to play a round at Algonkian Golf Course in Sterling, VA. It was a challenging course, with the tips playing at almost 7,000 yards. I’m not a long enough hitter to play from the tips, so I played up on the white tees, but that still played to 6,592 yards.

Simple possessions are placed in the grave of a deceased relative in this re-creation of a Caborn-Welborn burial set amid thatched wattle-and-daub houses overlooking the Ohio River. Research suggests that the Caborn-Welborn people were Shawnee, speakers of Algonkian languages living in groups located throughout the Southeast, and that the settlement depicted in this painting belongs to the Caborn-Welborn phase (about 1450-1650) of the late Mississippian period.

These stamps celebrating the Algonkian [Algonquin] people were issued on this date in 1973. Though they share their name with Algonquin Provincial Park (and also should not be confused with the Algonquian language and its speakers), the majority of the Algonquin First Nations live in Quebec, with a total population throughout Canada of roughly 11,000. In 2007, two Algonquin co-chiefs were arrested for leading a peaceful blockade on their sacred lands of an operation by Frontenac Ventures Corporation north of Kingston. Frontenac Ventures then sued the Algonquins to the tune of $77 million in civil damages. Charming.
