Why Hashtags Still Confuse Everyone
I’ve been using Instagram for years and still can’t tell you how hashtags actually work. Some days, a random tag like #coffeelover brings hundreds of views. Other days, a perfectly researched combo of #contentcreator #aestheticfeed #digitalgrowth does absolutely nothing.
It’s chaos, and maybe that’s the point. Hashtags aren’t a science anymore — they’re a gamble. The algorithm changes, people use them less, and yet we keep trying, like gamblers at a slot machine that sometimes lights up.
I’ve started thinking of hashtags less like strategy and more like conversation openers. If a tag feels too forced, it dies. But when it’s natural — when it fits the moment — it still finds its people.
So I still tag. But now I treat it like saying “hey, I’m here” to whoever might be listening. Sometimes someone answers, sometimes it’s quiet. Either way, it feels human.
