Ali didn’t talk too much as she and Ruby ate. She was too nervous, to tell the truth. This was her first time making something meant for more than one person, and it was a pretty involved recipe. Add to that the fact that--if Ruby thought of it the same way--sharing a meal like this could be considered a date, and you had the perfect recipe for one very awkward former streetrat. At least the lasagna tasted good. Well, to Ali’s unrefined palate, at least. She was still getting used to having money to buy food, and after subsisting on mostly granola bars and water and the occasional piece of fresh fruit when she could manage it for years, pretty much anything other than the most basic fare tasted good. After a while, she cleared her throat quietly, trying to think of something to say that wouldn’t make this any more awkward than it needed to be. “So, uh, how’d I do? I mean, it’s definitely no match for Granny’s cooking, but...it’s okay at least, right?” Oh yeah, that wasn’t awkward in the least. Boy did she need to work on her smalltalk.

Ali blinked a couple times, processing the gesture. A flower. Ruby had a flower in her hand, and she was holding it out to Ali. She reached out and gently plucked the blossom from Ruby’s fingers, lifting it to her nose to inhale its sweet scent and try to hide the blush tinting her cheeks. “Thank you,” she mumbled against the flower’s petals. “I’ll, um...I’ll put it by the jasmines.” To be quite honest, she really had no idea what to do. No one had given her a flower before. Sure, she’d seen people giving each other flowers, and she’d bought the jasmines that sat on the table, but no one had ever actually given her one before. True to her word, Ali found a vase and put the flower next to the potted jasmines, then crossed back to Ruby. She rose up on her toes, wrapping her arms around the taller girl’s neck, and pressed a slow, sweet kiss to Ruby’s lips. “It really...it means a lot that you thought of me like that,” she murmured softly.

Ali hurried into the warmth of Granny’s Diner, definitely glad for the jacket and scarf she’d been able to buy--with her own money! She was never going to get used to having her own money--with her paycheck from working as Mr. Gold’s assistant over at the pawn shop. The air outside was sharp and held a hint of rain on the wind. Ali had always loved the rain when she’d had a warm, safe place to shelter from it, which she hadn’t for the past nine years or so. It was surprising she’d lived through those years on her own, to be honest. But now she had a place to stay. She had a job to keep her living in that place and fed. It was all she could have ever hoped for.
She found a booth near the jukebox and plopped herself down in the comfortable, cushioned seat, then shucked off her jacket and unwrapped the scarf from her neck with a sigh. She looked around the diner, hoping to see a rather specific face. In the couple weeks she’d been living in one of the apartments above Granny’s, Ali had gone down to the diner for breakfast and come back during her lunch break, then tried her hand at making simple recipes up in her apartment when she came home from work. So far she hadn’t burned down the apartment, so she thought it was going well for being her first try at cooking. She guessed that also made her a bit of a regular at Granny’s. Which was, in her opinion, pretty nice. Especially since it meant she got to see Granny Lucas’ granddaughter every day. Ali had to admit, to herself at least, she might have a bit of a crush on Ruby Lucas.
