When humans say a place is "clean", they mean that it is so featureless and devoid of material that no other organism could hope to gain any use from it.

This is, of course, an advantageous adaptation, as there are many microorganisms that would seek to leech off of human prosperity. In fact, humans' only natural predators are microorganisms. So naturally, humans are quite ruthlessly territorial.
