Guided by Voices' 8th studio album was released on 4 April 1995.

It was the band's first album for Matador records, and despite the usual positive reviews, it failed to find a large audience. Alien Lanes was named the best album of the year by Magnet magazine, and Pitchfork ranked it #27 in the best albums of 1990s.
