hiii deru my most beloved !!!!!! where im from (greenland) we have a saying the day before someones birthday that i wanna explain to u bcos!! ur so smelly i can smell u from over here !!!!!! ✨
(here is a long explanation i thought u might find fun<3333)
its a grammatical error that just became the norm but in greenlandic we dont have a different word for negative smell/positive scent, but in danish there IS a difference.
we just didnt bother learning a lot of the different meanings (like he/she, smell/scent, this/that, pronounciation of the letters k and g when beginning a word and b and p to name a few examples) but still talked significant danish!!
AND THEN we have kaffemiks, which is the celebration held on someones birthday! usually, its an open house hosted by the family of the person where tea/coffee, several choices of cakes are made and traditional foods like whale skin, fish soup, seal, muskox and reindeer (usually whats in hunting season for the bday and what type of family it is (hunters etc)) are served!! its open to all who wants to stop and give their well wishes to the birthday person and its called kaffemik which is coffeemik, because the guests usually stay for the length of a cup of coffee!!
SO because theres so much food and cake to be served, you will walk past the house the day before and be able to smell ALL the scents of the delicious food being prepped and then tell others u can smell theres a birthday/kaffemik coming up, and because we then used the 'negative' danish smell word, it evolved into the birthday person is stinky and will need to shower the day before their birthday which is a chaotic and fun change in saying that came about when i was a kid!!!!
so WITH ALL THAT IN ONE MESSAGE im just here to say i can smell u all the way over here in scandinavia and i hope ur having an absolute treat of a weekend and birthday tmrw!!!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 i love you!!! say hi to audie from me - @alienaiver ✨
NOOOOHR!!!! Sweet Nohr! I'm so happy to see this message! 💜
This is all so fascinating, especially the open house part (Maybe I'll do that for my birthday next year, do something similar to that).
And if you can smell me, Nohr, I hope I smell like bakeries!
Honestly, this whole month has been a treat for me. A lot of my friends and family are busy this weekend for the upcoming memorial day weekend, so they celebrated my birthday throughout the month.
One friend bought me that cool PSA graded Charizard card, another one bought me a game I've been wanting and these two also treated me to dinner at this sushi restaurant (I could tell they just colored horseradish green and called it wasabi though, which apparently is common in Japanese restaurant in America) but the giant Sushi burrito was amazing, so I can't complain~
Then another friend took me to go see Thunderbolts (that one was kinda impromptu. He wanted to go see the movie, but found it was my birthday coming up, so he paid for my ticket).
Sunday is my official birthday, so I'm just going to focus on myself. Planning on making myself a handmade pizza, go to the local bakery for a birthday brownie and sugar cookies (they have the best sugar cookies, I can't describe them!) and maybe get some new shirts for the summer months.
Thank you again for the message, Nohr! It really warmed my heart!
And if you have any other fascinating Scandinavian stuff to share with me, please do! I absolutely love learning about other countries and their customs and such!!!!
