in which gregor makes a friend -- for @cozy-fish-crow
rotating aliit gregor very slowly on the spit
gregor whose home life was normal. happy. his parents loved him, and each other. until his mom got sick when he was a teenager, and his dad didn't know what to do with a sick wife. didn't know how to cope with the fact that she wasn't going to get better. so he detached, and gregor stepped up to take care of her, until she died when he was eighteen.
his relationship with his father had already been deteriorating for years, but her death was what finally broke it beyond repair. by the time he was nineteen, gregor just wanted to get the hell away. so he joined the army. it was kind of impulsive, but his maternal grandfather, who he was named for, had been a supercommando. it felt like a way to escape, and to honor his mom's side at the same time.
in basic training, he met a quiet, gruff boy a year younger than him, who'd been raised to be a soldier. wolffe couldn't stand him. gregor's jokes, pranks, and general goofy/positive disposition made wolffe think he was just some rich kid who joined up because he was bored, and that he didn't take any of it seriously.
it was a quiet (and relatively one-sided) feud, except for when the two of them hit the sparring mats. that was the only place wolffe could let his frustration loose without breaking regs, and gregor always gave as good as he got. every time they fought they'd both limp away bloody and bruised. until gregor finally had enough of wolffe's weird emotional constipation and decided to use the adrenaline from their spar to initiate a more pleasant form of back and forth between them.
twenty ears later (by the time gregor meets comet), wolffe and gregor are each other's best friends. strongest allies. partners in life, even if their lives don't often have them crossing paths these days, with the war raging on.

happy birthday gregor, my charismatic little (very big) fruitcake 🥺💖
i have no place to put this yet but it's for aliit and the he in question is skye (wild booing)
“He liked a certain look,” Comet shrugs a little.
“You don't strike me as the kind of person who has a certain look.”
“No?”
Gregor looks him over with a glance, tilts his head to one side, and smiles. “No.”
and i just think. this is it. this is the epitomy of them.
last line challenge
@adhd-coyote i missed your tag!! and i got uno reversed by @mereelskirata
this is for aliit somewhere down the line:
Comet's eyes widen a bit at the question, but he guesses he shouldn't be surprised Gregor asked it; he's so stupidly, annoyingly aware of everything all the time. Now he just sits patiently, dissecting Comet with infuriating gentleness and oh, Comet hates this game. The using his words game. Gregor knows it, too. That's why they play.
