After Alina had been back in England for a few days, she got a message from the Queen Mother. She wanted to send Alina to Scotland to check in with the Queen. In her bag was a letter from the Queen Mother offering Alina’s services to provide outfits for the crown prince as he continues to grow. This made the seamstress wonder how long she would be there. Maybe if she did her job right, she would end up in Scotland long term. The only problem was that she found herself lost somewhere on Scottish soil. With all the guards at the borders, she had to travel to Scotland discretely, so she volunteered to be dropped off at the border and to walk the rest of the way to the castle. She had a vague memory of seeing that that Scottish court was close to the Scotland-England border. Turns out there were multiple castles near the border, causing her to get herself lost. The last castle she went up to had people nice enough to give her directions to the write place, but following the vague directions led her somewhere in the Scottish countryside with no distinguishable landmarks. How long had she been wandering here? Hopefully it wouldn’t be dark before she found some sense of a path.

Alina was deeply enjoying her new role. It allowed her to travel all over the world where she could use her seamstress skills to foster relationships with royals as well as learn more about those countries. She considered herself lucky that her queen gave her such an opportunity, and she wanted to make the most of it.

She walked down the hallway towards her next assignment. Her sewing basket was settled in her arm to be ready for any task. Once she was granted permission to enter, she walked towards her new client and bowed. “I am Alina, the seamstress from England. I am here to perform whatever duties you need from me. How can I help you today?”

Alina’s memories of her birthday were filled with traditions. Every year on her birthday her mother would gift her with a beautiful new gown while her father gifted her with a beautiful painting he had drawn herself. With the new painting in view and dressed in her birthday gown, she would sit with her parents and eat a meal full of her favorite foods. It may seem simple in the eye of many, but to her it was everything she ever wanted. Now with her parents gone, those memories were more precious to her now. During her 10  years at English court, her birthday was not celebrated with anyone but herself. Instead, she would always treat herself to some sugar cake from the local bakery to enjoy after she finished her chores for the day.

This birthday, she quickly realized her duties were too much for her to take a trip into town to get her annual sugar cake. By the time she was able to get away, she knew the bakery was already closed for the day. She sighed as she saw the time of day and decided to spend her evening doing her favorite hobby. With that, she sat on a windowsill in a hallway where she could have light from the touch and outdoors for her to sketch some memories. In particular, she sketched her memory of the last gown her mother ever made her, the meal of favorites sprawled out on a table and in the corner of the page a recreation of the painting her father made on that last birthday. Happy Birthday to me.

There was a time where Alina dreamed of being a noble or royalty. She wished that she had her same parents but born to a higher status. It always seemed grand and wonderful at court whenever she would help her mother with dress orders they made for special events there. But if her 10 years at English court did not change her mind about that, her time in Sardina had confirmed that she was happy with her rank. Of course, she would like to earn enough money to have a dowry of some kind for marriage, but she knew that hopefully with the profits of her adventures her that she could start to create that for her. But since she was not a royal or a noblewoman, there was no stress on her needing to take sides on that matter. Simply do her job and continue with her day.

She had wandered that day and found a balcony that looked out on to the ocean. With no one seeming to claim it in any way, she moved and rested her arms on the railing as she looked out onto the ocean. With the bustle and gossip happening at the castle, it was nice to just look out and get away from it all.

The blonde was just outside the palace sketching the world around her. Looking at the sea, she was suddenly inspired to draw an outfit, so she flipped to a new page and started to sketch the simple outline. Then she went into details. It was perfectly pictured in her head: bright shades of blue and flowing light fabrics that looked like the waves of the sea. It would be stunning.

Of course, this was one of many ideas Alina had come up with since her time at the castle. She never had the courage to suggest one of these for those at court, but she enjoyed finding ideas for both men and women that maybe she will have the chance to make one day.

She saw the shadow come up behind her. She turned to look up at him. “I’m sorry. Am I in your way? I can move elsewhere.”

Alina was walking through the halls back to her chambers when she saw the Princess of Poland and Lithuania coming near her. The Duchess...now Queen...had pointed out her sister-in-law to her when they reunited after the plague. She better pay her respects to the woman. Alina walked to her and immediately curtsied. “Your Highness, I would like to send my deepest condolences with the death of your father. I lost my parents to the plague when it came over England, so I understand your loss.”

After knocking at the door, Alina waited patiently for the prince to open the door for her. She had received the summons that the Prince of France wanted a gown made for his sisters, so she naturally came well prepared with everything they would need for the first consultation meeting. The door opened and she curtsied immediately. “Hello, Your Highness. I am Alina...the royal seamstress you requested.”
