What I love about DTWOF is how you can see Alison Bechdel’s views on trans people grow and mature. Whenever Bechdel’s self insert Mo or someone else has something regressive to say about trans people, they immediately get humbled
Then you got Lois’ arc. Lois (previously an attendee of Michfest) begins questioning her own gender identity, becomes a drag king, joins Transsexual Menace, attends Camp Trans. She becomes not just the voice of reason during Mo’s trans related anxieties, but a mentor and adoptive parent figure to a trans girl named Janis
There’s also other trans characters that Lois befriends and introduces like Jillian (IIRC a transbian feminist and a member of Transsexual Menace) and Jerry (a former butch lesbian who transitioned to be a gay trans man that Lois develops a bit of a crush on)
People who say Alison Bechdel is some kind of reactionary transphobe/transmisogynist have no idea what they are talking about and just parroting whatever they hear on the Internet

celebrating nearly posting the first run though of comics!! some quick reflections on this blog:
I first got to see and read Alison Bechdel's Dykes to Watch out For comics as a 15 year old visiting my local queer community center when i was living in the midwest. I was super lucky to have this as a resource so close to my home growing up, i loved to take shaky pictures of the comics and individual panels I loved even back then!
Getting to see so many examples of queer adults both living and cartoons really set me up for success when it came to being a queer adult myself. Knowing what kind of trials and fears i might face in the future, getting a backlog of the issues our community recycles into a new debate every 5 years, and seeing what it looks like to actually cultivate community as an adult!
Once all the comics are posted, what next? After all the pages are posted I plan to keep this blog running by queueing up uploads from the start. I think at one point in time the bot was posting about 4 pages a day but from this point on it should only be one post a day finishing up the current 2003 book, then we'll go right back to 1986 to the first book again!
