On continuing plot lines without retcons

All this talk of Locust City got me thinking: what could a fun sequel game focused on Cunoesse and Cuno be, that wouldn't require retconning half their relationship the way the design document we have for Locust City does?

Just fantasizing, my thinking goes:

The base game basically writes itself into a corner as far as our dynamic duo goes. Either Cuno leaves with Harrier, or they're in deep, all but guaranteed to starve in the catacombs, or emerge out of there and get into trouble for robbing someone for food, or something. So unless it's the kind of syrupy writing that normally goes in my fics, Cuno leaves, right? And abandons C (who abandons this name, in turn).

And that could be the principal background of the story. Someone helped her survive. She knows who, the player doesn't? Same as she knows about her relationships in Martinaise over the years? In that time, her mental health keeps deteriorating - it's not an easy living.

And the game begins when one day she comes to her senses at a murder scene. There's some very obvious evidence that she is the killer (blood on her hands, etc). Then, to keep things interesting, there must be some possible evidence that the killer isn't her. Not even necessarily subtle, as long as the player is ready to entertain the thought, like a footprint in a pool of blood that's too large for her. But never definitive, always with a possible alternative explanation.

And that's the entire plot engine. C tries to investigate what's happening. Is it her killing? She isn't sure; doesn't really remember. The voices in her head aren't as clear or well-meaning as Harry's; some of them don't even speak Suresne, some hate everyone and everything around, some hate each other, some hate her.

People keep dying around her, and that takes further mental toll on her: she keeps blacking out, starts seeing increasingly elaborate and involved hallucinations - perhaps with näkki and fisher people, too. The world keeps getting weirder. Her beloathed Kuuno shows up, now a young RCM officer in charge of the investigation. Unwilling to accept the obvious. More people get sucked in; more die the longer it goes on. Perhaps even what remains of Harrier du Bois by then could die, too. Timelines mix. Things get increasingly surreal in her twisted perception.

...And I don't even think this needs a clear resolution, just some set of clues that could be interpreted either way. Like, of course the most obvious explanation is that she's a psycho serial killer. But that'd be a very banal, obvious and boring resolution, right? There must be a plausible alternative explanation, or better yet, a few, to the player's preference. Like, something incredibly mundane, like organised crime activity or maybe an attempt of a hostile counter-takeover of the industrial harbour. Then, something more esoteric, like her being dead since before the game begins, and the whole story being Pale echoes.

With an unreliable narrator, it could be possible to throw in mutually exclusive evidence to support all theories, too.

Has there ever been a Disco Elysium swap that makes Cunoesse and Cuno into Harry and Kim?

I think that type of alternative universe would be super interesting!!

C waking up without memory of who she is, a disastrous hangover and a fuck ton of rage. She hates finding out that she's a washed up Pig-cop, and is likely way way waaay more destructive of a force than Harry. I mean, there's definitely more kills to her name than *just* four

Kuuno de Ruyter, recently promoted Lieutenant of the RCM with a ton of baggage and chip on his shoulder, is sent out to help her out. He has problems with narcotics, a foul mouth and displeasant attitude

It's a match made in SUPER MEGA Hell, like:

"Is the fucking body still in the tree, you useless psycho?!"

"Shut the fuck up, vittupää, I don’t give a rat's ass about a fucking body!"

Lena's in shock, Garte is in shambles, and they STILL solve it. Somehow, someway.

Maybe the neighbourhood kids that are inspecting the hanging nuisance help them out, Harrier and K?

Cuno and Cunoesse, plus a little headcanon of mine where Cuno witnesses the aftermath of the tribunal and feels something is very wrong. bonus meme doodle as per usual

I’ve been turning it over and over on my mind. Cunoesse, as a character, can she be redeemed? Can she grow to live a happier life?

I’ve been thinking about this ever since I read the plot for the cancelled disco elysium follow-up game, Locust City, which would’ve centered on Cuno and Cunoesse. Spoilers: Cunoesse drowned a kid when she was younger and was going to sacrifice Cuno’s life in the place of her victim in a ritual to reintegrate into her original community. Even in the original game, Cuno outright states that shes killed before, so the writers clearly intended for her to be violent to this degree. Disco elysium also implies that Cunoesse manipulates Cuno, which Locust City demonstrates to be very true.

And yet. I love her. I want her to be happy. I look at her and see just a little girl, despite everything. It’s just how like I look at Cuno and see just a little boy. I have the same amused and endeared reaction to the both of them- I am genuinely surprised Cunoesse doesn’t have more fans (as far as I can tell).

I want, so deeply, for reasons I do not completely understand, for her to have the opportunity to grow and improve and discover hope like Cuno does. And I WANT so badly to believe that their relationship is an actual adopted sibling bond and not like, pure manipulation on her part. First of all I think Cuno’s not that gullible, even with his soft side. Second of all I NEED SO BADLY to believe that Cunoesse actually cares about him!!! FUCKKKKK these little brats have taken over my minddddd

I would like to believe that Cunoesse can be “redeemed” so to speak, or to be basically shown a better way to live, probably with the help of Cuno, Harry, and Kim. It’s definitely not canon, but I honestly I kind of prefer to ignore canon this time and interpret her differently. To be honest, I think it enhances Disco Elysium if the game doesn’t present her as an obstacle, someone you have to / should separate from Cuno. Sure, they’re definitely bad influences on one another, but they’re also each others hype squad and I can’t stand the idea of them separating or their relationship souring / being based on manipulation. I think shes such a fantastic character and,

tldr, I think Cunoesse has the potential to be just as lovable as Cuno given the right opportunities / tools
