WHAT SAY YOU - Alison Chemla

This week marks the return of Amber & Smokes' profile series, and what better way to kick things off then with one of my favorite jewelry designers - Alison Chemla; founder and creative genius behind the now globally celebrated Alison Lou collection. 

I had the great privilige of working with Alison at the very beginning of the launch of her brand, and always knew she was destined to go far. Her ironic, tongue-in-cheek approach to fine jewelry is both refreshing and intensely modern, perfectly complimenting many of her biggest fans; which have so far included Beyonce, Rihanna and Kelly Osbourne, among others. 

Alison's personal style is both irreverent and funny, perfectly echoeing the ethos of her brand. What always struck me, apart from her perfect pins and french-girl hair, was just how delicately scented she was. So I had no choice to find out - what does the coolest girl on the block use as her finishing scented touch? 

What do you consider to be your signature scent?

Good question. I don't know if other's would instantly recognise me by scent but personally I would consider my signature to be Narciso Rodriguez for Her.  The heart of the fragrance is composed with musk at its centre, surrounded by orange, osmanthus and amber. The base is composed of vanilla, amber and vetiver, which gives an unexpected earth-note to the scent. I love the balance between sweet and depth. It somehow just works for me, although the newer versions appear to have more of a rose not on top. 

How did you come to adopt this scent and what do you think it says about you?

I first found it when I was with my Mother at Jeffrey's in New York. It was the original musk oil that I fell in love with. And for some reason they no longer make it that way anymore. :( So now my Mother and I both wear the perfume. Which I think is kinda cool. I think this particular scent says I have great taste because this smells rocks!

                                    Anybody who knows me knows that my passion for fragrance is only equalled by my love for fine jewelry. I love anything whimsical, tongue 'n' cheek and with a certain disregard for the precious materials used in its design. Lydia Courteille, Victoire de Castellane and David Webb are just a few of my favorites for their hilarious and rule-breaking take on investment jewels. Joining that list is my newest obsession,  New York based fine jewelry brand - Alison Lou. 

Created by Alison Chemla, the debut collection was composed of the graphic language of the emoticon and the role that it plays in contemporary communication. Crafted in 14kt gold using accents of black and white diamonds, rubies, sapphires and rich enamel, the collection includes rings, pendents, bracelets and earrings depicting emoji favorites such as 'ROFL' 'Bashful' 'Crybaby' and 'Cool Joe.' 

        While I loved the first collection, it is Alison's second that got me drooling. Following on from the use of image as communication, Alison has revisited the ancient symbolism found in nature, often used to denote romantic expression. Using the serpent as a sensuous bracelet, ring and magnificent earrings, the queen bee as the ultimate power symbol or the inscribed messages of lovers on a tree trunk - the collection is both advanced, substantial, amusing and beautiful.

In getting to know Alison Chemla - I immediately know why the brand works so well. Inspired by old-world heritage and a true appreciation for impeccable craftsmanship, Alison successfully translates that innate understanding of meticulous design into a collection perfect for anyone looking to purchase their first piece of fine jewelry or for someone wanting to have more fun with the way they choose to express their identity. 

Pictured at the top of the page is my hands-down favorite. As soon as I saw it I had to have it and immediately placed an order, which should be fulfilled this week. As soon as it arrives I will be sure to Instagram the ring for you @LGOG.
