An Opinion on Change

Now I know that DCI is either considering making a change or has already made the change that allows all brass instruments into DCI. A lot of people aren't reacting too well to it because they think DCI should stick to traditions. I understand that completely. I also understand that there might be some people who think it might affect a corps' professional looking appearance, or even because of sound quality reasons. I don't have a very large musical background, so keep in mind, that most of this is just one person's opinion. But I'd love for you guys to give me some feedback!

But here's how I personally feel, DCI does need some growth. Opening up these potential spots may help keep some corps alive. It would also mean that they don't have to spend as much time training people who have just switched instruments. It would also help the marchers who actually major in music in college, so they don't have to spend all summer off their instrument. (like sousaphones, and contras). I know that it really messes up some musicians.

I love the look and sound quality of Contras. They always look to bold and majestic looking. It makes the performer look stronger, and I think it gives them more performance quality. But if my corps decided to adopt sousaphones instead, I would trust their trained professional judgement, and enjoy the sound.

If you personally wouldn't like to march a sousaphone and would rather choose a corps who doesn't wish to make any changes currently, I'm sure there will be something you can do. It's up to the corps to make that decision. Sometimes traditions need to be changed up a bit!

DCI?

I really dont think that the instrument rule will ever make difference.. I mean its really not going to this year since most corps are already through auditions and contracting. I don't think it'll make a difference in years to come either because the instruments the corps use is all part of it. Like we use contras and euphoniums because they are more bad ass, why would we take a step down on the bad ass meter?
