The Art of Living Lightly: All(zone)’s Light House Micro-dwellings at the Chicago Architecture Biennial
Bangkok studio All(zone) has conceived a small temporary home intended to be set up inside unfinished high-rise buildings in tropical cities. The project, called Light House, is featured in the Chicago Architecture Biennial, which opened on October 3 and continues to January 3, 2016. Encompassing 11.5 square metres, the boxy micro dwelling sits on a floor made of plastic-laminated plywood. The home's frame consists of a polyethylene-coated metal grid, which also serves as shelving inside the structure. Designed on a $1,200 budget, the dwelling was conceived in response to rising living costs in tropical cities such as Bangkok. The house is intended to be erected within unfinished high-rise buildings that are abandoned due to economic crashes or obsolete building systems – buildings that are often occupied by squatters. "The prototype house could lead to a new type of housing with less rigid materiality and energy," says the firm.
