Omar Tyree visits Wenonah High School for American Teen Read Week
Wenonah High School, most commonly known as the “mansion” definitely seems to be the favorite stop for most celebrities when they come to the Magic City. As part of the American Teen Read Week Initiative, Wenonah High School hosted a special assembly featuring the NAACP Image Award winning author.
Known for his best-selling books, Fly Girl, Leslie, and Just Say No to name a few, Tyree engaged the junior and senior student body on a literary journey to help them to appreciate the importance of reading. Tyree used the five key components of literacy (Reading, Writing, Thinking, Visualization, and Application) as his support text.
Keeping the focus of the American Library Association (ALA), Omar Tyree reminded students of the various resources and activities that they engaged in that promoted reading in some form. Using the storytelling process as part of his message, Tyree also reminded teachers that storytelling can be embedded into their lessons as an instructional tool to increase student engagement and achievement. Ending his message, Tyree explained to the students that whether they are cognizant or not, they read people and things everyday via their body language, assumptions made about them, their descriptions etc.
“No longer should you say, you don’t like to read!” ~ Omar Tyree
In partnership with the Joe Lockett Show Lock N Learn program and Andrejthomas.com, several students received autograph copies of his latest release, “All Access: The Price of Fame!”
Teen Read Week is week-long initiative that took place October 18th to October 24th.
