The Legend of White Snake to Air in April Despite China’s Ban on Costume Dramas
The National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) in China once again flexes its mighty hand and clamps down on historical dramas. Sighting The Story of Yanxi Palace, one if not the most popular historical drama of last year, as setting a bad example for the youth due to its showcasing of lavish lifestyle which is against the ideals of communism and socialism. The authorities also sited many instances where dramas twisted the narrative of the country's past and seemingly sensationalizing historical figures which can have an adverse effect on the young viewers. All costume dramas, historical, palace intrigues, fantasy, supernatural, and all other dramas set in the past, have been put on hold until June (this year).
The Legend of White Snake 新白娘子传奇 (2019) which was originally slated for March 27th premiere was reportedly pushed back till June according to early reports. However, the production team has just announced that the drama will in fact broadcast it's first episode on April 3rd on iQiyi. VIP members will have a chance to watch 6 episodes in advance. So apparently some dramas will still be able to air earlier than June. That's definitely good news!
Personally, I have been looking forward to this drama after seeing several posters and stills. The aesthetic perfection of Allan Yu Meng Long and Ju Jing Yi is enough to wet my appetite. There is an ethereal quality in both of then that fits the requirements of their characters in my opinion.
The Legend of White Snake (2019) is the latest adaptation of the beloved Chinese classic folktale which already have several incarnations including last year's The Destiny of White Snake with Yang Zi and Allen Ren Jia Lun. This version stars Allan Yu (All Out of Love, Ten Miles of Peach Blossom) as Xu Xuan and Ju Jing Yi (Legend of Yun Xi, Mr. Swimmer) as the legendary white snake Bai Su Zhen. It also stars Xiao Yan (The Legends) as Xiao Qing, Pei Zi Tian (Legend of Hao Lan) as Fa Hai and Feng Jian Yu (Men with Swords 2) as Zhang Yu Tang.
Let's all wait and see if the drama indeed sees the light of day come April 3rd. I just hope that other costume dramas will also have the same luck. Keeping my fingers crossed!

"Fuck the mantra 'Go Big or Go home.' You ever realize that the people who say that are the ones that don't go big at all? Take the big picture and break it into small pieces, stay home, and work on bits of it everyday. Fail at what you're making, too. Fail a lot, and it's okay, remember, you don't have to go home if you're already home!
You don't set out to build a wall. You don't say 'I'm going to build the biggest, baddest, greatest wall that's ever been built.' You don't start there. You say, 'I'm going to lay this brick as perfectly as a brick can be laid.' You do that every single day. And soon you have a wall. —Will Smith
And don't forget, every wall is part of a building, which is part of a street, that is part of a city, and so on and so forth. Unless your wall is a piece of art, then it can stand alone. "
