Crew of the week: Longboard Vitoria-Gasteiz
Stoked to share this short and sweet interview with Iñigo Otalora, awesome rider (and film-maker) and the man behind all the stoke coming out of this great crew. Glad to present to you his edit of the crew’s visit to Zaragoza last year. It is awesome!
Hey Iñigo, thanks for taking the time out to talk to us ! It’s a pleasure for me
Where are you from ? I’m from Vitoria-Gasteiz, a little cold town in the north of Spain.
Great. What’s the skating like there ? (say more about the size and regular events) Skating is very very fun now, we are a nice crew and enjoy a lot of things together. A year ago it was a little boring, everybody was skating alone. Thanks to the facebook page the crew started to grow and it’s continuing to grow. At our last skate there were nearly 40 riders who came to cruise. Last February there were 6. Longboarding has hit Vitoria this past summer. Over the last few months we held a very successful event with more than 40 riders taking part, coming from Mallorca, Madrid, Zaragoza, Bilbao, San Sebastian. There were two big cruising skates including Gnarlloween, mild downhill and freeride sessions, and a trip to Zaragoza. It’s been an absolute longboarding mad autumn! And best of all, the stoke keeps growing, we are a family.
What’s your crew called ? Longboard Vitoria-Gasteiz https://www.facebook.com/pages/LONGBOARD-VITORIAGASTEIZ/147603165333341
Who organises things in Vitoria-Gasteiz ? Well, I usually create events, upload a tonne of gnarly video links and try to get the stoke high everyday of the year, but everybody has suggestions, look for spots, etc.
Tell us more about the trip to Zaragoza! Haha WOW! It was an unforgettable weekend… I saw a video of an amazing spot near Zaragoza and got really stoked, so I sent a message to Paula and Nacho from the local crew and I proposed a meeting of both crews. They loved the idea and planned a fantastic weekend for us. It was called “Fusion of Crews” which was on the 26th and 27th of November. More than 50 riders, 19 from Vitoria. Unbelievable spots for downhill, cruising, freeride, slide, slalom, clubbing… so fun. The Longboard Zaragoza crew is fantastic. Really good skaters and great people. It seemed like we had been skating together for life. The family is bigger now. There will be some videos really soon.
Looks like a fun time. What do you have planned for the future ? (write more about the event idea) In 2012 Vitoria-Gasteiz will be the European Green Capital and we want to create a big event about it. I think longboarding is perfect as it’s a green way of transport. Mixing both things in an event would be great for the city and for longboarding. We want to organise a whole weekend with various events. Slalom, freestyle, maybe a little downhill/freeride, including a tour of tapas bars in the city hahaha and maybe something else that can´t be revealed yet. We would like to finish with a big cruise through downtown. We are also trying to organise another trip with Longboard Zaragoza crew for the near future.
The tour of the bars sounds like fun (and the skating!) When can we start looking forward to this ? Vitoria is well known for being a cold city, but also for being a city where the food is amazing! haha One of the crew members works for a program of leisure activities on weekends for the town hall and I’m in contact with him. His collaboration will be vital in carrying out this event. We’ll start to think about it seriously in January, and try to get it ready for spring.
Awesome, that will be on our calendar, we look forward to hearing more about (and supporting) this sooner to the date. Sure you willA lot of work to do, but It’s worth it! Just 3 easy questions to end with.
Are you regular or goofy ? Regular. (boo)
Pick 2 numbers between 1 and 10 3 and 7.
3 – What impact has longboarding had on your life? Longboarding has changed my life, not only for the skating itself, but also for all the great people I’ve met on the way.
7 – Best board you’ve ever ridden? That’s a very difficult question for me hahaha I’m a lucky guy and I’ve ridden a lot of great boards, but if I have to choose just one it would be the Rayne Killswitch.
Thanks a lot man, it’s been great talking to you ! Thanks to you, I am here whenever you need me This is my vimeo channel, if you want to watch more of my stuff!
