I’ve used William and Ashley. Ashley is gender-neutral, and both names have existed for centuries. I could see England calling NZ either one.

My character is named Noah, and has a Maori name of Heni (I think… I lost my Bio). But he named himself in my headcanon… I’m no help.
Those are some good names! Also I looked up Ashley and apparently it's pretty popular here. (I wondered where your bio went when I was trying to poke around NZ accounts...) And them naming themself is fine though; I've always been all over the place with thoughts about by who/how/when nations are named. Your headcanon's as good as any~

Uhh, not that I’m into APH, but this caught my eye, and I know that Wiremu is quite generally also translated/changed to William? idk //hides
Whoops, it seems it is. But I also often see Iorangi used? (I had a classmate who was William/Iorangi and the teacher used it in our Waitangi studies so that's my main point of reference.)
