"Did you find one?" He asked from his comfortable position next to her. While she was facing the grass, he was lying on his back, and had spent the past half hour either sleeping or cloud gazing, she couldn't be sure. She was scouring the grass for four-leaf clovers, but hadn't managed to find one. She neglected to tell him that she had given up ten minutes ago and was instead counting the new freckles on his arm. For that dvd commentary game :))
So I basically wrote that while lying outside on a blanket, and it was sort of like a daydream, and I just had to write it. And it was so warm, and I was listening to Perfect by Ed Sheeran and I thought about how I could translate that lazy feeling when the sun is caressing your skin and you’re so incredibly at peace and you have nowhere to be, how I could translate that to words.
Sometimes I just see this everyday thing like a clover and think about some headcanon--how it would play into Linstead for example. And that’s what happened here. Also I think we were discussing Jesse’s freckles at some point shortly before that.
And they just... they deserved that after everything they’ve been through. I wanted them to have that happy moment away from the world, where it’s just them, and they can realize how lucky they are to have each other. I was planning on causing some more drama before wrapping up the fic, but I wanted to give them some peace before all the angst.
I definitely wanted to show how Erin, despite maybe being against this escape initially, she was thankful for Jay always being by her side, and I think this scene just shows this really in-love side of her that we so rarely get to see. It’s the equivalent of a heart-eye emoji, that’s how I pictured it. And also how even after being through a horrible thing, he can still make her feel like this. It was the one thing I didn’t want them to ever lose. They’ve lost so much in Gone already, but they could hold onto that, and that’s why I knew they’d be fine.
Yoo you picked a really nice one, thanks :) I hope you enjoy this detailed commentary :D
