Hello! Just came across your art and I love how you texture things. How do you get that effect?
hellooo ! thank you for the compliment first nd foremost. i hope you don't mind me providing an exact tutorial on how i do this LOL. it's honestly nothing special but i think the important thing is to experiment. but anyway ..
my primary program is clip studio but it doesn't make a difference, or at least not a big one. i'd also say beforehand that my brushes tend to make a bit of a difference in my textures but it doesn't matter what kind of textured brushes you use. i use many on low opacity just for my overlays lol.
ok ok important first step is i put all my layers in one folder. or at least the layers for the subject i wanna mess with. i then duplicate the folder and then merge the layers in the duplicate. turn off the visibility of the original folder. i do this just to preserve my layers in case i need to fix somethin. thennnn you duplicate the merged layer... as many times as you need, honestly. move the og folder anywhere you want but for me it looks like this.
note to dupe them before you edit colors or add filters. this is just for safety again LOL. for the first dupe (the base layer), literally go crazy with the brightness/contrast, tone curve, and posterization <- the posterization is Necessary. it'll look intense at first...
but once you have it to where you want it, use the second dupe layer in any way you want. it'll be in the original state of the piece so usually what i do is tone curve and mmmmaybe sharpening filters. only sometimes. use a different blend mode for this layer or change the opacity (i forgot to do so in some of the screenshots) as you wish.
then the third dupe is again whatever you want. except i use this layer to make my art look more grainy and varied in colors. i use this dumb auto-action i found that makes the layer literally look like shit but if you just change the opacity anywhere below 40% + turn the layer to an overlay then it just makes it look nice.
then lowkey i just use my reference photo (or any photo) as another overlay but on realllly low opacity. i erase any bits of the reference layer if it makes certain spots on my art ugly. (also turn the reference layer to a color dodge layer if you wanna be like me, or well, whatever you desire. go with whatever looks cooler to you).
the hard mix layer you see is just me literally using random brushstrokes with various colors of red, blue, and green. not joking. i like hard mix a lot.
and thats how i got my final product :-) you can honestly not follow my specific methods because it varies a bit in separate pieces. you can skip certain steps, add steps, add more overlays, less overlays, whatevs!!!! textures literally define you so much <3 but i hope this helped!!!
