8. The way cold glass fogs when you press your hand against it
Emotions washed over Ela like a wave. First, she was happy because it was silent. Then she was scared because it was silent. She had two small children and Fox for a husband. The flat should never, ever be silent. She tripped over the sheet as she ran out of bed, pulling her robe on inside out.
She skidded to a stop in the living room. Fox was sitting on the floor, one little girl on either side. He whispered instructions to them as they drew on the fogged sliding-glass doors with their fingers.
Fox looked over his shoulder and smiled at her. He put a finger over his lips and gestured for her to get out of sight. Loudly, he said, “Looks like we’re done. Söt, do you want to get Mommy?”
“Yes! Me, me, me!” Like her mom, she tripped over her feet on her way up before barreling head-first into Ela in the hallway.
“Good morning, Darling.” Ela pushed some of her daughter’s strawberry blonde hair behind her ears to no avail. “Someone’s excited.”
“We drewed you a picture!”
Ela let herself be dragged by a tiny hand back into the living room. Fox and Lhunie stood proudly in front of the doors.
“Look, it’s Tani!” Lhunie said, pointing to the three cats of various quality.
Tanithil himself was snoozing nearby on the couch, his ear twitching.
“He looks lovely. Thank you.”
Grinning from ear to ear, Fox stepped up to Ela and kissed her. “Good morning, Belovèd.”
