For those of you whom I have not met, I’m Allison Bloechl, a graduate of the class of 2014. For those of my friends who read that and had a heart attack, don’t worry, I’m still Allie. Here’s what I am up to out in the “real world.”
Currently, I am a full-time company member and acting fellow at Hedgerow Theatre, America’s oldest repertory theatre. Hedgerow is located just outside of Philly, about an hour from Muhlenberg. Our legacies include Shaw, Brecht, Ibsen and, yes, even Keanu. Hedgerow is a company-based theatre that produces professional theatre all year long.
I do a lot at Hedgerow. Technically, I am the female Acting Fellow with the company, but really it is so much more than that. Hedgerow prides itself on being company-based. Everyone does everything. Besides being the resident leading lady, I am the Box Office Manager and Fight Choreographer, and I offer support in other departments, such as production, props, and marketing. Josh Portera (’14), one of our three male Acting Fellows, additionally works in marketing and dramaturgy on top of his work as a performer. We wear many hats here.
I’ve been with Hedgerow a little over a year now and since then have had the opportunity of performing in four of their mainstages: A Murder has been Arranged (Lady Beatrice), Don Quixote (Maritornes, Curate, others), No Sex Please, We’re British (Susan), and most recently Bullshot Crummond, in which I not only performed as the evil Lenya Von Brunno but was the show’s fight choreographer. This Saturday (10/24) we open a five week run of Dracula in which I am playing Lucy.
Coming up we have our yearly production of A Christmas Carol, followed by The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy in January, where I will be playing Trillian. February brings the regional debut of Liz Duffy Adams’ Or, a three-person show about the life of Aphra Behn, playwright, mistress, and spy. Among several characters, I will be playing Behn’s favorite actress and lover, Nell Gwynne. In March we have the world premiere of Agatha Christie’s The Mysterious Affair at Styles followed by a new adaptation of The Servant of Two Masters — both of which I will be performing in as well.
So all in all the real world has been pretty fantastic. Keep cultivating relationships and learning as much as you can, Muhlenstudents!
