She scrolled her finger down the screen of her phone, eyebrows knitting together as she read the short messages Leo had just sent off.
He normally took losses lightly, always saying that the next match would be better. Sometimes it was and sometimes it wasn’t. But as Anya had learned quickly in their relationship, this sort of ideology never applied to the Champions League.
It was only the group stage, and they hadn’t even lost, but Leo’s brusque texts were enough for her to know that he was less than satisfied with the results. Anya had thought they’d played decently, but not even her encouraging words seemed to change his mood.
She let out a sigh and pushed her phone to the side, pensive as she settled her gaze on Evie. The little girl’s eyes were glued to the television set, where highlights from the day’s matches were playing. Anya had tried to change it to something a little less sportsy and a little more kid friendly (and Anya-friendly), but she enjoyed hearing Evie shout in excitement any time she saw Leo’s face or the familiar blue kit.
Anya returned to responding to the emails she had been neglecting all morning, nursing a cup of tea as the coffee maker gurgled behind her.
The opening of the front door and the soft noise of it closing that followed it signaled Leo’s arrival nearly four hours later. With a disapproving look at the clock on the wall, Anya pushed herself up from the bar stool, arms folded over her chest as she turned to face Leo.
“You said you’d be home hours ago,” she snapped, her lips pursing together.
Leo refused to meet her eyes, sidestepping her to make his way into the kitchen. She followed persistently, watching as he reached for the cup of coffee that had long gone cold.
“Leo.”
“I’m sorry. I should have called.”
Anya let out a sigh of frustration, resting a tense hand on top of the counter. “Yes, you should have. And you can’t be that upset over a draw.”
He nodded his head distractedly, shoving the mug into the microwave.
She wanted to scream, but she had only just gotten Evie down for her nap. Instead, she moved closer to him, blocking his access to the microwave. “You played great, okay? You’ll win the next one.”
“Maybe.”
“Stop moping. Maybe it was an off day, but you have to get over it, Leo!”
Leo finally raised his gaze to hers sheepishly, the corner of his lips pulling up ever so slightly. “You’re right, I’m sorry.”
Before she could respond, the all too familiar shout of “daddy!” sounded from behind them. A grin took over his face and he turned to scoop up Evie, as Anya rubbed at her forehead with her fingers and suppressed a sigh.
He looked back at her, leaning to press a kiss against her cheek. “I’ll get her back to bed,” he promised.
She gave him a resigned nod and watched as Leo vanished with Evie in tow. It was only after he had disappeared up the stairs that she remembered the mug of coffee that had been abandoned in the microwave.
Once she had reheated it, Anya climbed the stairs, making straight for the bedroom that she shared with Leo.
As she had predicted, he was sprawled across the bed fast asleep, Evie tucked up against his side. Anya shook her head with an amused smile, closing the bedroom door before returning back to the kitchen to dispose of the coffee.

if your old job is less stressful you definitely should! the stories you tell are outrageous tbh and no one should have to deal with that shit :/
omg it definitely was. my old job can be summed up in one sentence "visual, oil and pack out." this lovely new job they're trying to shove me into would exacerbate my asthma i'd have to lift half my body weight and work 70+ hours every single week. seriously in 28 weeks at the job most people are making 30k because they're forced to work so much. to quote keith "nobody should have to be put on anxiety and depression medication and half to go to consoling just to get through their job."
seriously though some of the work practices this place does are terrible. but one the bright side i'm a very giant thorn in the system with 200+ employees behind me.
They've shoved Evie onto her parents for the day, the three year old promised an eventful day of baking cookies and visiting the newest exhibit at the children's museum.
Ordinarily, they'd spend a day like this at home, taking advantage of their rare alone time with one another in the comfort of their bed.
Instead, they're in a waiting room, Leo rubbing soothing circles into the palm of her hand. She's flipping anxiously through the magazine in her lap with her free hand, eyes barely registering any of the images or words before her. Leo keeps his silence, knowing that anything he said would go in one ear and right out the other.
Anya clenches his fingers as they're called back and left in a small patient room, waiting for the doctor to come in.
"Are we sure we're ready for this?" She asks in a quiet voice, looking at him where he's sitting in a chair a short distance from her and the examination table.
"You need to relax. We've done this before. You can do anything." Leo reaches his arm out, resting gentle fingers on her knee. She forces a tight-lipped smile, covering his hand with hers to try to stop her shaking.
They'd talked about it, joked about having another baby as Evie celebrated another birthday. It had seemed fun in the beginning, brought a new excitement to their sex life as they used it as an excuse to disappear into the bedroom every chance they had.
Now that they were here, after she's been throwing up in the mornings for weeks and had a positive test at home, she's not feeling so confident in their decision or carelessness. Getting back into shape after Evie had been difficult enough, and Anya's not sure she can do it again, especially with having two babies to worry about on top of Leo's busy schedule.
Anya isn't allowed to fret over it much longer as the familiar face of her doctor appears in the doorway. Anya grimaces as her doctor dives right into the never ending questions, refusing to let Leo pull his arm back. She holds his hand hostage, gripping it tighter and tighter with every minute that passes.
"Let's do the ultrasound then, shall we?"
She wants to glare at Leo when he nods his head enthusiastically, but she can't as she has to recline back against the exam chair instead. Leo is standing now, hovering by her side and intertwining his fingers with hers. His eyes are darting anxiously from her to the blank screen as the doctor prepares the cold gel Anya is already dreading the feel of.
She hears Leo inhale sharply as her eyes focus on the screen, a dark blob coming into view.
"It looks just like you, Anya," he whispers with a toothy grin, and she has to bite her lip not to laugh.
"Wait a minute..." the doctor interjects, making both of them look at her with wide eyes. "I've got two heartbeats here."
Anya painfully bites her tongue at the statement, and Leo goes stiff beside her.
"Two?"
The doctor nods, her finger pointing at the screen. "You see that? One baby is almost hiding behind the other."
She meets Leo's eyes, and any trace of a smile on her lips has disappeared as she lifts her arm up to smack him in the chest. "Leonel Higgs. This is all your fault!"
He's wide eyed and taken aback, looking from Anya to the doctor with an uncertain face. "What?"
"You're a triplet! You put twins inside of me! My career is over! I'm going to be huge. You did this!"
He starts laughing, reaching out to wipe the tears that are flowing down her cheeks away.
"I'm sorry. Really. I am."
She wants to believe him, but the grin on his face makes it hard to do that. She looks away from him and sniffles, staring hard at the screen in front of them in disbelief.
Anya's quiet the rest of the trip, but not even her silence is enough to drench Leo's excitement. He's practically bouncing in place the whole drive home, humming along with the radio and casting pleased glances in the direction of her stomach every now and then. When they reach their house, he stops her before she can run off to the bedroom with a hand around her wrist.
Leo pulls her to him, his hands settling on her hips.
"Please don't hate me."
She frowns up at him, chewing on her lower lip in a determined silence.
His fingers drift towards her stomach, resting against it despite it being flat still. "We're not going to have one, but two more beautiful babies. And they're going to have the most amazing mother ever."
Anya can't fight the smile now, matching Leo's own wide, proud smile. "I guess their dad won't be so bad either."
He gives her a knowing smile before he lowers his mouth to hers to capture her lips in a deep kiss.
"Evie's going to be so excited," he murmurs against her lips when they break away for air, his fingers now tangled familiarly in her hair.
"Stop being so smug about this. I'm still going to resent you for the rest of my life," she says, smacking her hand against his butt before she slips away from him. "Twins."
"I love you too," he responds with a laugh, leading the way to the kitchen to prepare a pot of tea.
