how was harry written before 2013? I know what gba said about L but don't remember about H. I came in the fandom in 2014 and I don't really read much fanfictions
Ohhhh this is one of my favourite topics.
One of my favourite games to play is ‘guess when this fic was written’ because it tells you so much how the boys were presented to the fandom. So for example, in 2013 you see frat boy harry, or the start of the trend of break up/reunion fics (like my fave solar flare fic) where Harry has left the band to go on to bigger things, then comes back to a less successful Louis for a 1D reunion.
Or in late 2013-mid 2014, you really see villain Harry emerge (e.g. Y&B). Or you see silent, quietly, comfortable with his sexuality Harry paired with an angsty Louis who has *shit to work out*. The real shift, though, is in 2015, once Harry starts being rebranded as carefree California spirit who loves smoothies, avocado and yoga, but also super free with his sexuality, aka Escapade Harry.
So for me it puts into relief what GBA said about being able to change the roles in the band easily, which we very much saw put into practice across 2014-2015. It’s not just Harry either, though he changes most drastically. Before 2013 is really interesting for me (and the hardest to guess) because the fandom really hadn’t settled or developed characterisation for Harry beyond the cheeky young one, so there’s a lot of variation and I find it really interesting.
Of course these are trends, and based on fashions in fic as well as fan readings of the band archetypes, and it’s far from an exact science, but I just find it fascinating. It’s also just a very fun, silly, game to play.
