Early mornings where Diluc was just returning were common place. It wasn’t a surprise, him coming home just as you were leaving. Your heaved a sigh, knowing you only had mere moments to spent with him before leaving yourself. Would he get enough sleep, if any at all, prior to going about his day?

You’re silent, still tired eyes focusing on his form. A hand lifts, index and middle finger hooking onto the ponytail to pull it undone. You shift to your knees on the bed, nuzzling into his shoulder, welcoming him home with a hug and kiss against his neck.

“You should rest, sunrise.” Your words are soft, quiet - as if the sun were setting and the slightest noise a bit too loud would wake anyone nearby. You know him intimately, though. He doesn’t rest easily, either due to insomnia or simply preventing himself from sleeping. So, you try to compromise before he argues. “Even if it’s only for an hour.”

The hints of pain hidden deep in the words are all out of place on the other man’s lips. The last thing William wants is to cause any of his loved ones distress on his behalf, least of all Mr. Bond— he’s the newest among them, after all. He deserves a better welcome than that. 

     ... Although, regardless of how long he stands at his side, William doubts that sentiment will ever begin to fade. He doesn’t wish to put the weight of himself upon the shoulders he had made every attempt to lighten. 

As he meets Bond’s gaze, he cannot help but soften, warmth spreading through his chest and coloring his expression as he reaches out a hand to take one of James’. His thumb traces a tender path along the other man’s knuckles and he offers a smile in place of the twinge of sorrow that nags at his heart.

     “You’re far too kind, Mr. Bond. I’m afraid I am undeserving, but I am grateful nonetheless.” He doubts he could ever understand what Bond must see in him, to be speaking this way. Viewing himself through eyes unclouded by all the blood he’s spilt...even the very idea feels impossible. 

But Bond is not the sort of man to grant false reassurances, nor does he silence himself. What he says in moments like these, William believes— and so if he claims to look upon William favorably, even with all that he’s done...no matter how he may feel personally, he cannot doubt Bond. 

     “If I may be so bold as to say, though, I much prefer seeing you through mine. Knowing you is a gift. A privilege that I will hold dear, always, regardless of what I think of myself. Again, I am grateful— both to you and for you.”
