I Wish You were the One
“You have GOT to be kidding me, Dean!” Sam grumbled “seriously, you haven’t seen Cas in two months!”
“What’s your point, Sam?” Dean asked, peeved. If his brother could mind his own business…….
“My point is, the guy probably thinks you hate him.” Sam replied, knowing he was pushing Deans buttons. He knew Dean wasn’t fully to terms with his own sexuality, but this was SAM for Pete’s sake! Their dad was out of the picture, and it was just the two of them living together now. Dean should very well know that Sam wouldn’t be judgmental in the least!
Would be hypocritical to do so, given his own preferences, but still!
“Come on.” Sam clapped a hand on Deans shoulder, giving it a squeeze “the guy is crazy about you. I’m sure he’d be willing to take things slow so you would be comfortable.”
Dean was a retired sailor, Sam an airman. They had both signed up in order to escape a less-than-desirable home life, and were now adjusting to civilian life together. Not too long after getting their apartment, they’d met the Novak brothers, Castiel and Gabriel.
Sam was still unsure as to how they could possibly be related. They looked nothing alike!
Gabriel owned a coffee shop, Castiel worked the book shop next door. Dean and Castiel, both perpetually quiet creatures, had hit it off rather well. Sam and Gabriel had become friends, too. Just friends, though. Gabriel wasn’t judgmental, given his own brothers preferences, but he was as straight as a board. Sam was okay with that.
Dean and Castiel were taking things slow, though. “Slow as molasses in winter” would be the way Gabriel described them.
Sam knew it was hard for Dean to deal with this. Their dad hadn’t exactly been the most open minded or accepting, raising them in a hyper-masculine household ever since their mom died when they were kids. Sam had gone to college before enlisting, so he was ‘better’ about it, but Dean had gone into the service right out of high school. He’d gone for ten years active duty, Sam for six, so they hadn’t seen each other properly in ages.

“Are they arguing AGAIN?” Gabriel asked, handing Sam a warm cup of hot chocolate. Sam and Dean had gone to visit Gabe and Cas, and Castiel had immediately gone into it with Dean, arguing about their ‘relationship’.
“Yeah,” Sam scoffed “I don’t know what’s worse. When they shout at each other, or when it’s quiet like this.”
“Given how loud your brother is, and how quiet mine is, I’m not sure, either…” Gabriel agreed, both of them jumping when they heard Dean shout.
“DAMN IT, CAS!” Deans voice was ragged, worn down “I CAN’T DEAL WITH THIS!”
“Deal with WHAT, Dean?!” Castiel was shouting, too…..
“Uh-oh.” Gabriel and Sam looked at each other, worried. Shouting usually led to holes in walls and all night drinking sessions. What Dean said next, they couldn’t hear.
They could certainly hear the aftermath, though.
“Get out!” Castiel shouted, door separating him and Dean from Sam and Gabriel flinging open. Cas looked positively LIVID.
This was NOT going to end well…..
“But Cas-” Dean looked like he’d fucked up, BIG TIME.
“I..said…OUT!” Castiel grabbed Deans arm, shoving him towards the door.
“Bro….Cas, stay calm….don’t want to hurt him too much, now do we?” Gabriel moved towards his brother, in much the same manner as one would approach an angry animal.
“I could throw him from the fire escape, and it would be no less than he deserves.” Castiel growled. Sam had never seen Cas like this…..
“What the hell did you say, Dean?” Sam demanded, walking over to his older brother. Dean, for once, was at a loss for words. Castiel gave the elder Winchester a glare full of disgust before turning on his heel and leaving.
“I would like to know too, Dean….” Gabriel turned to the brothers, just as livid “what could you have possibly said that caused my baby brother to want to use his own military training on you in all the worst ways?”
Dean looked down, unable to look at Sam or Gabriel. His cheeks were flush in embarrassment and shame as he fiddled with the ring hanging around his neck. Sam recognized the tick straight away.
“Dean, you didn’t…..damn it, go home.” Sam sighed, gently pushing his brother to the door.
“Sammy…” Dean was surprised when Sam threw him his coat.
“You need to clear your head, and I’m pretty sure Cas doesn’t even want to think about you being here, so I’ll explain.” Sam assured him “though, if you want my opinion, the way you went about this way nine kinds of stupid.” Dean didn’t respond, instead taking his brothers advice and leaving.
“So, sasquatch, care to explain?” Gabriel motioned for Sam to sit at the kitchen table. “I think we’re going to need something stronger than cocoa for this, aren’t we?”
“Beer or anything stronger, yeah.” Sam sighed, sitting with his best friend at the table. He then launched into an explanation. The mental abuse, constant traveling, dealing with their dads drunkenness. How that, on top of enlisting right out of high school all manifested in Deans internalized homophobia.
“Well……damn….” was all Gabriel could say when Sam was finished.
“Tell me about it….” Sam agreed, finishing off his beer.
“So…..I’m guessing it was college that kept you from turning out like he did?” Gabriel asked. Sam nodded.
“Deans fucked up royally with Cas, you know,” Gabriel pointed out “he and I both know pretty well what it’s like to deal with that.”
“Yeah….I’m not sure what Dean can do to salvage it all.” Sam shrugged.
“He’s going to need to work pretty hard.” Sam and Gabriel whipped around to notice Castiel standing in the doorway. “I heard everything….and while it may take a while……I’m sure I can forgive him eventually.”
