Like cities across the country, we are facing an ongoing affordable housing crisis--and now an epidemic where access to a safe home with the ability to shelter in place is incredibly important for community health. With workplaces shutting down, lots of people are already wondering how they’re going to afford the rents that were already sky high. Working people & families and families have been pushed out of the city. A record number of people are dying homeless on the streets. All of this is only getting worse under the pandemic and recession. Our city needs to build 156,000 affordable homes to just meet the current needs. The private, for-profit market has failed to meet human needs, because corporate developers and large property management corporations are driven by their own profits to exploit tenants--rents are STILL going up, even during the pandemic. We need a major expansion of social housing: publicly-owned, permanently-affordable, energy-efficient homes. Social housing is also part of the #GreenNewDeal program. Such an expansion of housing will also be a major jobs program, creating thousands of living wage, union jobs, which are more needed than ever in the context of this economic recession. This has to be funded by taxing the largest corporations, not working people or small businesses. Seattle and WA State already have the nation’s most regressive tax system. A poll following last year’s Seattle City Council elections showed 75% support for taxing Seattle’s biggest businesses to fund vital services. While working people are wondering how they’ll pay rent, Jeff Bezos is profiting off the crisis as Amazon workers are forced to work without basic protections. Wealthy businesses should pay to address Seattle’s affordable housing crisis. for more, visit taxamazon.net/faq want to get involved? go to taxamazon.net/events . . . #AllowUsToExplain #socialhousing #affordablehousing #union #jobsprogram #ThingsAmazonWontDeliver #RentStrike2020 #TaxBigBusiness #LivingWage #workerpower #typography #activism #so https://www.instagram.com/p/B_AGhsgJqmU/?igshid=mbr1x7iig4xp
