Paarsetulpen, tell me your thoughts about Tseng, for the character ask. I want to know!

favorite thing about them: Idk, everything? Solid character design (read: he's GORGEOUS), compelling arc, charming mannerisms - he's got it all.

least favorite thing about them: It's not really something about Tseng himself but it's annoying how often he's left out of marketing/spin-off/merch stuff. For once I'd like my favourite character to be the one who gets all the extra love. Please SE, I want to give you my money!

favorite line: "There's nothing more precious than a life." It really highlights his morals and idealism when he was younger and the ultimate tragedy of his character of turning into a hardened killer. (I'm also in the middle of a BC rewatch and Tseng's instinct to protect/preserve life stands in an interesting contrast to Fuhito's death cult-like ideals.)

brOTP: As much as I love his relationships with Aerith, Zack, and the other Turks, his relationship with Veld has to be my favorite. It's one of the most interesting and complex ones in the whole compilation imo.

OTP: TsengRu. Yeah, it's the most common ship with him but what can I say? I like a good boss/right-hand man dynamic, especially one where they are sometimes at odds with each other. Their relationship goes through many phases in the compilation, leaving many opportinities to explore questions of trust, loyalty, betrayal, and forgiveness. I've also been dipping my toe into Veld/Tseng for similar reasons.

nOTP: I'm not really into him with Aerith (romantically) and Elena.

random headcanon: Although he doesn't really have time for hobbies, he does like tinkering. Not really with big and heavy machines like Rude does, but smaller stuff like watches or guns. Between missions, he'll often fix up his guns himself.

unpopular opinion: He does genuinely care about his teammates and doesn't just stick around with them post-Meteor out of duty. When Rufus is kidnapped, Tseng goes out of his way to find him despite Shinra being destroyed and him owing no more professional loyalty to Rufus at that point (we've also seen him do something similar for Zack and Veld even if it meant doing against Shinra's authority). He also indulges in their wishes even when he himself isn't invested, like him understanding that Reno wants to protect Evan. Reserved as Tseng is, he doesn't do much PDA but he'll leave no stone unturned if someone he cares about is in trouble.

What made you ship it?

Osmosis. Definitely not the actual game where I don’t even remember them having a conversation. But like, in VII fandom it’s a medium-tier popular ship and the headcanons have proliferated; the idea that Tseng and Rufus grew up together because President Shinra had no time/inclination for Rufus, that they were similar in age (apparently this one’s controversial?) so they became attached to each other, and that they have this weird corporate liege and his blood knight dynamic. I’m probably misrepresenting a lot of people’s opinions here, ha.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

This is my preferred ship for both characters because I like what it adds to them. Tseng in particular, I think. Being a Turk is a heavy, heartless job. They don’t exactly need reasons to be doing the work - money is certainly enough for Reno - but I feel like it adds something to Tseng when you can exactly pinpoint his priorities and loyalties, and those loyalties begin and end with Rufus.

On Rufus’ side, the headcanon dynamic paints him with a brush that’s slightly more childish but slightly more proactive as well. I like the idea of Tseng and Rufus as co-conspirators, taking an active role in trying to shape the world they want to reach.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I don’t know whether or not it’s unpopular, but I’ll never get on board with the idea that Rufus was like... a good guy, fighting the power from the inside? I think there’s something along those lines in BC? Or maybe I’ve just seen it around. Either way, I think he’s a little shit and any ideas he might have of a better world are completely self-serving, and that Tseng’s a pure pragmatist who might push for change if it suited him or benefited his, but never because it was somehow more ethical.

Why I like them - Uh, I don’t? But if I have to say one thing, I guess it’s the fact that he successfully built the Shinra corporation and lead Midgar to basically just rule the planet within only 40 years. I actually headcanon that before Shinra, the planet was basically rife with poverty, famine, war, etc. Mako energy improved the lives of nearly everyone in the world. It’s why so many people put their trust in Shinra because their lives are so much easier than before. 

Why I don’t - Pretty much everything else. He’s a total jackass and narcissistic, a ruthless dictator, a terrible father, a genocidal maniac, and greed personified. 

Favorite episode (scene if movie) In OG when he dies! Cloud and co walk into his office and he’s just fucking dead, impaled by Masamune, it’s great.

Favorite season/movie- I think Remake perfectly captured him. His cold ruthlessness and his complete disregard for morality. As fun as his OG death scene was, his speech to Barret in Remake is also pretty sweet. 

Favorite line To Barret: “Picture a world without Shinra. Without Mako energy. A stagnant, impotent world. Now picture a natural disaster. Who would help the people? Help them recover and rebuild? You? With their old world ruined, will they thank you for the new?”

Favorite outfit- The purple suit in remake is nice I guess.

OTP idk in canon he got with a lot of ladies and had a bunch of illegitimate children, so I don’t think he’s actually capable of being truly in love with someone.

Brotp Him and his right hand man Heideggar! 

Head Canon Although his public persona is extravagant and showing off his wealth, like his gold statue and ridiculously huge office, his private quarters are actually completely minimal and barren. No pictures on the walls, just a plain bed and maybe a desk. He actually prefers minimalism, but puts on the show of extravagance for intimidation and influence. This is a trait that Rufus would also have.

Unpopular opinion I’m actually really sick of the fandom’s constant comparison with him and a certain US president. Shinra is a cold, calculating, competent leader who actually knows what he’s doing. The real life guy is a loud bumbling baffoon jerk who got lucky. People who compare the two give the real life guy way, way too much credit.

Sexuality Headcanon: Felix is mostly ace. If inclined, though, to romance, the gender doesn’t matter to him as much as his partner being able to keep up with him. Gender Headcanon: I see a lot of trans Felix headcanons, and I don’t disagree, even if I don’t specifically write it. A ship I have with said character: Sylvain, Dimitri, or Bernadetta because his support conversations with Bernie are adorable. He just has amazing chemistry with Sylvain and Dimitri. A BROTP I have with said character: Sylvain all the way. In universes where they are not head over heels in love they are best friends. A NOTP I have with said character: Weirdly, Annette. I don’t get ship vibes from their conversations. I get friendship. A random headcanon: He is the gothest jock. General Opinion over said character: I love my Felix.

Writer would you ever... write Cloud/Tifa or Genesis/Aerith?

I don’t think I want to write Cloud/Tifa, not for myself at least, I tend to lean towards viewing them as like Ult BrOTP status friends. So not for myself no, but for other people, like in fic exchanges, than yeah they can make each other relax for a while and just be the kids they were forced to grow out of too quickly!

I’ve never really considered Genesis/Aerith so that’s probably another no for me. I think Aerith’d be a bit too round-about for Genesis, as much as he likes to use and employ flowery language he’s someone who prefers to not have to guess and figure out what someone means when they something. idk Aerith’s just never really felt like a very straight-forward-answer kinda person to me and I think that’d annoy Genesis more often than not.
