"My kind were here..."
He'd suspected it, how else could he have been so drawn to the mountain? Of course there was the gold but it was more than that. It called to him, in a way that other hoards had not. The gold was one thing but the presence of other dragons...It couldn't be resisted. It was only now that he'd searched for traces of them, taking on his human shape to look in the smaller chambers where in his normal form he couldn't reach.
It had taken a while and driven him far from his trickster's arms but he'd found what he'd been looking for. Eggs, dragon eggs, nestled deep in a pile of blankets in the corner of the room.
The moment he'd found them he carried them out and shifted back to his true form, breathing little wisps of fire over them in the hope of saving them but no...They had died centuries ago. He didn't know why he'd been stupid enough to even try.
Why had they been left there? Where had his kin gone? It didn't matter, all that mattered were the eggs at his feet and he shook as he turned to face Loki, surprised by the sudden moisture falling down his cheeks. "They were here...They..."
He couldn't find the words and in the end they didn't matter, his legs shook as he got to his feet and he staggered over to Loki, falling into his arms with a quiet groan. "Can't...Loki..." He was weak, the cold starting to sap the strength from his limbs. "...Hurts...Why does it hurt?"
