I think one of the things people really resonate with on Instagram is the serendipity. You know, how you’re scrolling through your feed and all of a sudden *those* words find you. The ones that are so true and so well-timed that they simultaneously make you want to laugh and cry. The words that— when you see them— some part of you wants to immediately dismiss because in the end, it’s a quote on a screen on your phone. But you can’t— you can’t dismiss it because it’s already made your stomach churn a little, your heart beat faster. Those words are the truth you’ve been running from— the part of the advice no one gives you because it wouldn’t be something you’d want to hear. Some call it tough-love, others just say it’s kindness mixed with a dose of realism. But for me, I remember the moment someone told me this. You do not have one thing in your life that you aren’t allowing to be there. Now, for the record, I’m not talking about those things with our health we can’t control. So let’s take that off the table. When I heard it— I was immediately like, “but I can’t change that person, and “I can’t control how I feel.” And I followed it with a million other excuses, like we all do. And the person who looked me in the eyes and told me this— they said it with the sincerity and confidence that made me know it had been a well-earned truth for them, too. You may not be ready to heal. Or let go. Or make peace with that person that hurt you. You may be too busy and too stressed and all those other things you tell yourself. You know, the things that buy you— time. Just stop. Stop waiting. Take control of your life. Even if you can’t control the people and the things in it— you can always control how you see things.
