Hello vox! Hope you had a great vacation! (Which is a really good song BTW [great vacation].) I was wondering, have you ever had a fic/fics that you were so excited to birth them that you rearrange your posting/writing schedule for it? Either excited as you were writing it or excited after you finished it. If so, which ones? Do you have rankings of your favorite fics you've ever written? Thanks! 𓆝 𓆟 𓆞 𓆝 𓆟
The vacation was nice! The city was a disappointment (great food though), but the company more than made up for it 😌
As for whether I rearrange my posting schedule for fics I'm extra excited to post—absolutely!! The most recent example can be found here: I bumped the Modulo!Yuuji time travel fic into the March roster. Last year, I did the same for you left me bleeding in the garden of eden, and prior to that, everything burned, as promised got the same treatment. The kidnapping fic, (let me be clear) every version of the story ends with you being slaughtered), as well—that's the only one in this list that's not time travel lmao.
As for my favorite fics, I think I made a list like this once on my now-nuked blog when @otterlycosplay asked, but that's gone now. Plus, the list has changed, too. Some of them remain the same, though.
Picking from just JJK, here's my personal top 10:
1. (let me be clear) every version of the story ends with you being slaughtered): Goyuu. The first canon rewrite I've fully pulled off; a fic that permanently altered how I write Gojou by improving my understanding of his character; the most satisfying relationship development and progression I've ever tackled.
2. you left me bleeding in the garden of eden: Goyuu. Contains the best headcanon I've come up with to date (the name and concept of Yuuji's domain expansion, which is based on his canon domain but expanded and explained based on some of my ideas) and some emotional scenes goyuu that were very cathartic to write.
3. a fugitive is also a kind of dog: Goyuu ft. Modulo Yuuji. Helped me channel and get a better grip on all the many, many intense emotions Yuuji's fate in Modulo evoked in me, and I'm even more obsessed with him as a result.
4. the brute fact of flesh awaiting our teeth: Goyuu femslash. Has the hottest sex scenes I've ever written, in terms of the kinks involved and how they're presented. Also the fic where I finally grasped goyuu role reversal dynamics, which is why it turned from PWP to porn ft. relationship development.
5. bloodstains on the collar means just don't ask: Goyuu and sukuita. My first (but certainly not my last) attempt at a no powers AU. Translating JJK characters and their dynamics into a mundane setting was both rewarding and educational, in that figuring out how to write these people as batshit crazy even in a world where they're not gods among men greatly improved my understanding of them as a whole.
6. you were made in the image of god (i was not): Goyuu. Started out as pretty much a vent fic after the ending, specifically with regard to how we don't see them lay Gojou's body to rest after that whole body-wearing thing, but ended up as mostly a postcanon Yuuji character study.
7. little lamb to the slaughter: Goyuu. The second fic I wrote for JJK, set during the basement era. Was fundamental in helping me figure out their pre-Shibuya dynamics and how to leverage their canon chemistry for the kind of stories I want to write.
8. a grave and i share the same unclean throat: Sukuita. Grounded firmly in my late-canon sukuita feelings, especially everything from Yuuji's domain expansion onward. Helped me get a handle on Yuuji's complex, conflicting feelings toward Sukuna (and in general) at that point, as well as Sukuna's particular blend of denial and acknowledgement, flavored with fixation, regarding Yuuji.
9. (dripping from the open mouth, i'll show you) what you look like from the inside: Nanaita. Writing Nanami is always a joy, but this no-Shibuya postcanon take on his relationship with and feelings toward Yuuji took my love for his character and this ship to the next level. Oh, and it's a chikan story ft. bigfuck Yuuji.
10. the mouth of the wolf, the eyes of the lamb: Goyuu and sukuita. Hands down the most complicated story I've ever written in terms of plot: canon-based AU world-building (curses and sorcerers to demons and demon hunters), ensemble cast all with their own roles, multiple relationships (romantic, sexual, and platonic), etc. Pulling it off was very satisfying as a result.
The common thread is that these are fics that improved my understanding of the characters/relationships involved and/or was very satisfying to write.
(Those links likely won't work now, since AO3 is down. Fingers crossed it'll be back up soon.)
