OKAY SO. THE THING IS. i don't believe in Nevers, and positionality is not the kind of thing i consider set in stone for characterization. anyone can top and anyone can bottom. penetrating or being penetrated says Nothing about a character or their personality or anything.

topping is not domming and bottoming is not subbing. and i DO think it's more possible for dominance/submission to be requisite elements of sex for some characters. Me Personally i think this is the case for curt AND bucky; it's not that i think curt would NEVER sub, anyone can sub or dom, but i do think he's VERY STRONGLY INCLINED and VERY STRONGLY PREFERS to dominate. he is SO ridiculously unflappable every time he's on screen—he's casual in the bremen debrief while gale is bluescreened and bucky looks like he wants to cry; he's utterly unphased by the careening landing in scotland and doesn't panic for even a SECOND when it looks like cargo might hit the farmhouse, he just handles it; he jokes with his crew and gale before they go up and tries to keep bucky stable on the wing, and when he can't it really comes off as a slip in control, not doing something because his CO told him to; he very subtly but unquestionably controls the bar scene, from needling the RAF into the challenge to getting gale to back down from the fight CURT PICKED, and WITHOUT upsetting gale by being too forceful or obvious about it, to the way he leads the motion of the fight itself, wheeling bryan around so that imposing, tall-ass jack is between bryan and his much heavier RAF pal in case the other captain gets ideas about retaliating, and then he TAUNTS BRYAN by weaving like he's drunker than he is, the lean forward and head waggle, and ducking his swing not once but TWICE before landing a one-hit KO WITH HIS LEFT, NOT HIS RIGHT LIKE BRYAN'S EXPECTING. the only moment he loses control is just before he dies, during the most chaotic mission yet after his ship's been picked off from the formation and isolated, and EVEN THEN he keeps the plane level so everyone but dickie and him make it out. he's not a brat, he doesn't fawn over gale like the rest of the 100th, he has scary-dog privileges with ALL FOUR MAJORS, he has absolutely NOTHING to prove. he likes having control and he's good at getting and keeping it. he has so much bde! i just cannot see him subbing! or at least not very often!

Gale Fucking Cleven, hands DOWN. first off, i'm EXTREMELY tired of the way everyone treats bucky as the one who needs to change to Deserve gale, when gale is the one constantly shutting bucky's feelings down, making him shut up and sit down, shoving him around when the situation does Not call for any rough handling... sorry, but gale has a lot of work to do before he's Worthy Of Bucky, not the other way around. further, i DON'T understand from whence comes the predominant fandom image of him as like, this nice sweet guy who cares about other people and needs to be protected and wrapped in a big fluffy blanket and kept safe. no. he is awkward and cold and uncomfortable with people as individuals and SO invested in maintaining the status quo that he CANONICALLY APPEASES LITERAL NAZIS rather than stick up for his men, because keeping his head down is what keeps him safe. that's what makes him an interesting character! the flaws and contradictions make him fascinating! but this toothless, perfect, compassionate, always-does-the-right-thing would-never-shoot-a-child-not-even-a-nazi-child-in-uniform gale that so much of the fandom seems to love bears nnnnooooooo resemblance to the scared little boy pretending to be a Big Man that is gale cleven in the show.
i also cannot be convinced he's not vanilla as fuck and kinkshamer supreme—the whole "daddy wants to take you to the woodshed" so-repressed-it's-turned-him-into-a-capital-f-Freak-in-the-sheets fandom characterization does NOT land for me either. marge wanting to be on top is spicy and skirting the edge of Appropriate to that man, okay? he thought he was 100000% straight until the stalag, and the SECOND his feet hit American soil he is BOLTING back to marge mentally screaming CAN'T CATCH ME GAY THOUGHTS!!! and never intentionally thinking about the stalag handjob he gave bucky—and did NOT let bucky touch him to reciprocate—ever again. he's not the one engaging bucky's gunplay fantasies. he's not the one putting a collar on bucky. it's just not in him. even in dctctcverse, that man does not have a dick up his ass until 1947 at the EARLIEST.

...i am pretty shameless, is the thing. i have a couple clegan fics bookmarked, i guess? but what the fuck else am i gonna bookmark in this fandom, there's like seven curtbucky fans and most of the other writers for it don't like dom!curt/sub!bucky.
