EP Mixing Weekend
In case you haven’t heard, we’re busting our asses on an EP. After about 10.7 billion iterations of playing the same notes over and over, we’ve finished recording.
Just being honest here - when you sing a song a bunch of times, you can start to forget what it was about in the first place. It’s a sad thing and it’s something that singers, performers and artists struggle with every time they make art - what the f*** am I trying to say here? What does this mean? What do I want it to mean?
This is of course may come off as a pretty basic problem. Well basic or not, struggling with meaning in art happens throughout the process, whether you’re a beginner (us) or you’ve been around the block.
To address that, I tried to put a special emphasis on remembering, because it’s the memories that inform the subject matter of these songs. Recalling every person, place, color, smell, conversation, everything left unsaid was something that I needed to do to feel like I was making an honest product.
We chose the takes that reflected what I thought most closely captured the original intention and meaning of each song - everything from vocals down to auxiliary percussion. The result has been a level of earnestness that I’m not normally comfortable displaying, but I’m genuinely proud to share with people.
We’re headed up to Seattle this weekend to start the mixing process. We’ll update with photos and maybe a little video depending on how secretive we’re feeling.
