I forgot to post about my latest clinical day!!
Page and I got to be in the ER. Wasn't too much going on, but we did get to see an abscess be lanced and squeezed.
The patient got these a lot, and boy did he scream when the lidocaine shot went in. Funny thing though, he was covered in tattoos.
The abscess spread about 6 inches on this guy's back. And it looked painful. Red, swollen.
So it gets all numbed up, and the PA starts to cut in. Immediately blood starts running down. I was in charge of suctioning the excess blood so the PA could see what he was doing.
Now, the patient also had a hx of MRSA so we had to be in our PPE gear. For all of you non-medical peeps who have never put on a PPE gown, let me tell you, it gets hot quick.
The door was shut, I was against a corner, no air was felt blowing in, and you've got on this hot plastic gown that just traps all your body heat, right?
And I'm suctioning blood out of a wound.
At this point, I'm okay. Page is looking at me though, I guess I was getting shifty. PA discovers he can't get anything other than blood to come out, so he goes out to get an Ultrasound machine. While he's gone, the patient is going on and on about how green the puss is, how horrible it smells, and "just you wait, it gets better!" And here I am, just suctioning away the blood that is sTILL coming out because he won't sit still. And I finally smell that iron smell of blood.
I'm starting to get really hot and a bit dizzy now.
PA comes back and I just know I need to leave or I will hit the floor or break the PA's sterile field (I'm right next to it)
Hand the suctioning to Page, nearly trip on the tubing, and very calmly walk out.
I have tunnel vision now. And my hearing's gone. Last I see is a nurse sitting at her computer. I call out, "Ma'am?" and she turns around, sees me and asks if I'm okay. I shake my head no.
"Do you need to sit down?" I nod my head yes. I'm grabbing the wall now, and I can't see a thing. There's a rushing noise in my head, and the next thing I know is hands ripping off the PPE gown, I've got my head between my legs, and an icepack. I have sweat running down in rivulets, you'd think I just came out of the shower.
They asked (I still can't really see who's helping me, God bless them) if I could walk to a bed or if I needed a wheelchair.
Oh hell no. I can walk. (Maybe)
Somehow I make it across the freaking ER department, can't see a thing, and when I make it to the room, first sight I see is a trashcan, and I promptly throw up in it.
I spend the next few minutes just sitting there on the bed, and I remember Page coming by to see how I was doing. I was completely numb shoulders down and my hands were so bloodless. Page is a really good friend, and she'll make a wonderful nurse one day. She made sure to make me drink my sprite, made me lay back, and kept me talking and distracted. Bless her.
After that, I was able to freshen up a bit, calm my ridiculous stomach down some more, and I returned to the floor. Completely fine after that, and was able to help my nurse for the day.
And that's the story of the closest I've been to passing out over simple thing of blood.
