After the death of her uncle, widowed Beatrice Poole, and also secret authoress of several popular gothic novels, seeks answers. Not just because he might be murdered, but because the future of her young cousin rests in making a good match. A match which needs a dowry. A dowry which is now in jeopardy with her uncle's death. In order to save her family, Beatrice must seek out the reclusive Mad Monk of Monksworth, Leo Drake. An expert on ancient antiquities, Leo has no intention on helping Beatrice. Not only has she barged into his home, terrorized his staff, and demanded to see him... but she also stirs something deep inside him. Something he's reluctant to name. After butting heads, he agrees to help. But the more they grow closer to the truth, the more it threatens to kill them... and also consume their passions.

So... melodrama aside, I really loved this book. For a novel published in 1998, it's surprisingly modern and fresh and way more progressive than I expected. There were women supporting women. Oodles of sex-positivity. Women having agency over their lives. Sex workers treated with decency and dignity. There's even several Bechdel test passes and even a Mako Mori test pass. Seriously... it's better than many more recently written books... I am not going to name names... but my One-star reviews speak for themselves. Beatrice was a fun character. Slightly naive but not totally. Nothing more than you would expect in an upper class woman of the day. I liked the little touches to her character.

Leo was also fun. Alpha but not to the point of being an a-hole. Strong, but kept getting into scrapes. Protective, but still slightly unsure with how to deal with his emotions. I was pleasantly surprised reading this book, and I'm smiling while writing the review for it. So if you like historical romantic suspense with sensuality and a good mystery. Definitely give this a go. Five stars.

So... I wrote a book. And then I published it.

Hello friends,

I’ve been away for a long time. Real life became too busy with full-time work, a (neglected) PhD thesis and a toddler, and I had a hard time keeping up a regular online presence. But I still had a dream -- I wanted to write and publish a novel before the end of 2018, and just like my dear friend @fromthedeskoftheraven I managed that, though just barely!

My novel went live on amazon.com in November 2018. Eeek!

I want to take a minute to thank everyone who has supported my fanfics in the past. Your kind words have given me the confidence I needed to embark on the complex and often daunting undertaking of writing a novel, so thank you. Thank you so much!

The book is a sci-fi take on Cinderella. It has all the elements that I love writing -- a shy heroine who blossoms when she’s challenged, a sexy, growly, very masculine hero who isn’t looking for love but falls hard, and plenty of sexual and emotional tension.  If you’re curious you can check it out on Amazon here:

Can I just say how much I love this line?  The hero (Royd) is actually asking, sincerely, for her view.  He’s not making excuses about anything, he just wants to know what she experienced so he can understand it.  A+ Hero

Army Ranger, Cash Baker, has a problem. Well, several really. First, he seems to be trapped in a bunker. Second, he's got some pretty substantial injuries. Third, and most importantly, he has no idea how he got them or how he got there.. His memory of his past is gone, and all he's really able to recall tells him that whatever landed him in this position was really, really bad. Enter psychologist and blast from Cash's past, Dr. Sophia Rhodes. She claims Cash is in danger. That she's been sent to rescue him. That she's working with an outfit known as Decorah Security to help him uncover the truth. The question is: Can he trust her? And more can he trust himself around her?

I've enjoyed Ms. York's writing before, so when the opportunity arose for me to read this I jumped on it. It's a light, fun Romantic Suspense novel with a few interesting twists and turns. It's not really paranormal romance like some of the other books in this series, but there are some paranormal elements to this particularly later on. Cash is a pretty alpha male character, but he's not a full alpha a-hole. Thank goodness. He does listen to Sophia and others and knows when he's out of his depth. I liked Sophia. She was a good character who wasn't TSTL and provided very solid advice and adapted well to a situation which was way outside of her depth.

While the book can stand on its own, it would likely be more enjoyable if you read several previous books in the series. Lots of characters show up from those books and it can be a little confusing if this is where you're jumping in. Ultimately I liked this book, but I didn't love it. Four stars.

What’s been super fun and really sexy for me has been all the consent issues that are going on in the world and just making sure they’re coded into the book. I say often that dirty talk in romance novels is just ongoing consent. Dirty talk in life is just ongoing consent, and so it’s been really fun to write a truly dirty-talking hero. It’s something romance is going to have to deal with more and more over the next, say, 18 months. I think we are going to see a lot of books that are working out the kinks of how we write alpha heroes and sex scenes while still making them consensual and ensuring that we’re giving a thoughtful assessment of the world that we are living and writing in.
