I did a thing guys. I went on a typewriter/writing device shopping spree and just be ready to be spammed as my machines come in.

-she was cheap and as much as I want a real aesthetic pleasing typewriter im also conscious about drafting and wasting paper. (But I do love me physical not digital editing ways) so this baby i can type like 3 pages worth of words and make sure its okay and print it. Very excited.-

-absolutely would not purchase full price. Their price is a joke. You can't change my mind. I found this for like 80$ off.. used and I offered the person the highest I would pay for it and they accepted it so this beauty is shipping to me!! -

-ive got mixed feelings about this bad boy. Im beyond excited enough that I backed it since prelaunch. But im getting impatient. (Hense the spree on the other devices.) But im holding out hope for this. I understand things have come up and have things happened internally and externally for them. So im trying to hold out.-

i looked it up and someone has made a program for linux to connect to alphasmart neo word processors. Amazing, I dont own anything with windows on it anymore because windows is lame

Writing Life: What writing life?

I have a little notebook where I keep track of my daily writing habits, and it’s looking sad. My spring break (from teaching) was two weeks ago, and I gave a single day to luxuriating in writing and then had to turn my attention back to my other paying obligations.

I persevere. I make notes and lists by hand. I write in little bits of time around the edges of my workload. Additionally, I try to keep up with The Industry, often by listening to podcasts... which is why, as of tomorrow, I will have an Alphasmart Neo, thanks in large part to Jennifer Stevenson and @ktempest‘s The Write Gear episode 8.

I am usually a little hesitant about anything being the answer to writing more, but I figure with the Alphasmart, if I have a few moments to write, I can do that without being seduced by the Internet. And I can also use it to keep myself from overly editing what I write while I’m writing. To top it off, the entry price is right (I found one for $30 through the eBay link). 

So thanks, The Write Gear! 

(Fair warning: The next episode will be on fountain pens and I may need to avoid listening lest I make a massive JetPens order at the end.)

Alphasmart Dana

If you're considering investing in a used Alphasmart Dana for NaNoWriMo, I wrote a blog post that you might find useful!

I also have a NEO, 3000, and 2000—feel free to ask me questions about those too.

Although the 3000 is just fine for NaNoWriMo, I'd recommend the NEO above all because it's pretty minimalist and has spell-check, word counts, and an awesome battery life (700+ hours!).

Rediscovered this bad boy today, and am thinking it may be time to draft another book on it. I used it to write most of Demonglass, and always really dug it since A) it runs on 3 AA batteries for, like, ETERNITY (I changed them out today because they were running low. I put those batteries in in 2008, people), B) NO INTERNET FOR DISTRACTION (v.v. important), and C) at the end of the day, you just plug it into your computer, hit a button, and BOOM, it's all in Word for you. That's kinda magic. Also, did I mention the no internet thing?
