Following his departure from the legendary fusion group Weather Report, the album marked a shift toward a more cohesive, progressive jazz-rock “song cycle” compared to his previous diverse works.

Reception
The AllMusic review by rated the album 2 and half stars and stated:”The record is a great showcase for Johnson’s bass playing, alternating between soloing , lead bass , and supporting duties. The band delivers a very solid performance, though they never get as much spotlight. … Actually, the whole album works as a suite, and while it is not a must-have, it certainly shows ambition and originality.”
