At the beginning of the 2nd century BC, Athens introduced a new style of coinage. The familiar motifs—the head of Athena and her owl—remained, but they were redesigned in a more elaborate fashion, with a stylish crest added to the reverse. In addition, the coins now featured the name of the city along with various other inscriptions and letters, the meanings of some of which remain uncertain. As we see on this coin :
Obverse
Head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet, bowl decorated with tendrils, griffin and the protomes of four horses above the visor.
Reverse
Owl with closed wings and head facing, perched right on amphora on which Δ. In inner left field, anchor downwards with star to right; ME below. All within wreath.
