At the beginning of the 2nd century BC, Athens introduced a new style of coinage. The familiar motifs—the head of Athena and her owl—remained, but they were redesigned in a more elaborate fashion, with a stylish crest added to the reverse. In addition, the coins now featured the name of the city along with various other inscriptions and letters, the meanings of some of which remain uncertain. As we see on this coin :

Obverse

Head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet, bowl decorated with tendrils, griffin and the protomes of four horses above the visor.

Reverse

Owl with closed wings and head facing, perched right on amphora on which Δ. In inner left field, anchor downwards with star to right; ME below. All within wreath.

Exceptional bronze Medallions 57,58 g; minted in Rome , For Philip the Arab (Marcus Julius Philippus) was a Roman Emperor who ruled from 244 to 249 CE. Obverse scripted : CONCORDIA AVGVSTORVM. Tiered: the draped armored bust of Philip the Arab with laurel wreath and the draped bust of Otacilia Severa with diadem, bust view to the left. Opposite: the draped armored bust of his son Philip II with laurel wreath, bust view. On Reverse scripts : SAECVLARES // AVGG. Chariot race in the Circus Maximus. In the front three teams to the right, one to the very left in the front view. In the middle ground the spina with palm tree and other architecture. In the background the stands and several buildings.

The reverse of this five-aureus piece commemorates the reconquest of Britain by Constantius in AD 296.

On the obverse Constantius assumes the guise of Hercules, his divine patron. In Tetrarchic ideology the western emperors were assigned the divine patronage of Hercules while the eastern were assigned #Jupiter. Hence the proliferation of coin reverses honouring Hercules and Jupiter as guardian gods or conservatores. This arrangement reflected the relationship of #Diocletian to his colleagues; he retained legislative control of the empire while his colleagues undertook heroic labours on his behalf.

The reverse legend emphasises the pious duty of the emperors (the plural signified by the double G) in helping such a beleaguered province.
