i’m having really bad writer’s block so here’s part four of the headcanons for my family au! this time billy and steve go back to hawkins so everyone in their makeshift family can meet the baby! (also i realize in sweet like bubblegum...i said they were married at one point despite being very aware that same sex marriage had not been passed in cali yet... whoops)

when the baby is about four, five months old they decide to spend some time in hawkins (well, steve decides that they should spend time in hawkins so everyone can get together and see the baby)
despite the fact billy’s gotten close to everyone as the years have gone by, he’s terrified that he might run into his dad, who he knows from max, is still in hawkins
but everyone’s that’s also left hawkins is planning to come back into town just to see the baby, and it’s the end of summer so they’re all able to get some time off for ‘family matters’
steve finally talks billy into it, working him over with kisses and a very welcome back massage (also he says he’ll break neil’s fucking nose if he even gives billy a dirty look and billy… would love to see that and do the same himself)
they stay with joyce and hop (who’d finally gotten together a couple years back) because steve feels weird about staying at his folks’ place, even with the work he does for his dad’s company and his parents being aware of his ‘living situation’ -- it just doesn’t feel right
steve’s mother doesn’t like that, snaps at him over the phone that joyce isn’t even your mother! and when he finally placates her enough to hang up, billy doesn’t miss the maybe joyce should’ve been that steve mutters under his breath
billy gets anxiety from flying but it would’ve taken ten times longer to get back to hawkins if they’d driven with a four/five month old in the backseat, so steve holds his hand through the four hour flight and billy only pulls his hand away, embarrassed, when the flight attendants come by
and the poor baby cries, because the pressure hurts her ears, and steve feels so bad and when billy whispers maybe we should’ve driven after all, huh? while trying to sooth her, steve flicks him in the arm and just scowls
they land in indy and nancy and jonathan are there in hop’s truck to come get them but nancy ignores steve and billy so she can see the baby while jonathan is just embodied by Fear the second nancy gets her hands on charlotte (billy definitely makes another jab about him being a dad before he knows it and jonathan pales even further)
steve: “nance, john! it’s so good to-” nancy: “oh my god, is this her? she’s so little! let me hold her so you guys can get the luggage!”
nancy fawns over the baby while steve’s standing there in stunned silence holding the baby bag while billy and jonathan go deal with the suitcases
when they get to the byers’ place, steve’s knocked over by all the ‘kids’ (who are now in their mid-twenties) and billy quickly passes the baby carrier off before max tackles him to the ground
immediately, joyce and hop are deemed adoptive grandparents and char loves them and is so fascinated with everyone in the party because they all react to her so differently
(like max can’t believe billy has a kid and that she’s an aunt now but vows she’ll be the cool aunt; lucas and mike are kinda ‘eh’ about babies in general but they’re good when they handle her, because they grew up with younger siblings and whenever charlotte cries act the calmest of them all besides hop and joyce; jane is fascinated by the baby since she’s never been around one so intimately like this and is always looking; will is super gentle the one time she’s passed off to him, and he angrily shushes when she’s sleeping and anyone talks too loud; dustin gets dubbed uncle dustin and steve asks if he wants to be a godfather of sorts, and dustin cries and agrees, refuses to put the baby down or give her back all throughout dinner the first night)
jonathan brings a polaroid camera to get some good raw pics of everyone with the baby
at one point nancy’s holding her so steve and billy can eat breakfast in peace and char is absolutely mesmerized by nancy - joyce calls it intuition - as she just stares at her the whole time, then nancy tries to hand the baby off to jonathan
the baby actually scowls at him in a way that’s very reminiscent of her papa (you know the lil squinty face he made when he and steve were squaring off in the byers’ driveway in s2) and billy and steve cannot stop laughing
they get spoiled rotten with gifts from everyone and they have to buy another suitcase for the plane ride back
but then joyce says her and hopper have gotten the baby this little play station and steve’s like joyce how the hell are we going to get this back on the plane with us and she says oh i’ll just ship it to you then and hop looks like he’s going to have a heart attack thinking about how much that’ll cost to send off
hop and billy sit out on the porch late one night and steve can just hear them through the screen door and it warms him down to his core when he hears the clap of hop’s hand on billy’s shoulder telling him you’ve done good, kid
they spend the next day down at the quarry and have a picnic because the sun’s shining and it’s so fucking warm out just like back in california but there’s no beach nearby and joyce packs all this food for them
they all spread out on blankets and soak up the sun, and billy gets laughed at by the ‘kids’ because he’s still all tan and buff in tight, short swim trunks with his earring and short curly hair but he’s got the baby carrier on at the same time, bouncing char up and down because she’s fussy and doesn’t like sunscreen (that steve has just smeared her in)
they immediately stop after he glares at them over his sunglasses and he gets the baby carrier off
joyce sits on shore with charlotte while everyone else screws around in the water - there are a number of chicken fights, including steve struggling to hold billy up while lucas has maxine on his shoulders and the two step-siblings deck it out, and hopper gets involved at one point, hoisting steve up on his shoulders so he can get revenge on billy for shoving him off dustin’s shoulders (jane might have helped with a little flick of her wrist)
nancy takes a break from the splashing around to sit on the edge of the bank, charlotte between her legs splashing in the warm shallow water before she starts getting fussy and babbles for her dads
and they’re there in a heartbeat, billy scooping her up while steve rubs her back and once she settles she slowly starts to fall asleep, drooling against billy’s chest
they have lunch after that, joyce and hopper having gone off for a stroll while everyone else gets metaphysical about life and asking about what it’s like to be the first parents in their little family -- steve’s doing most of the talking while billy lies down on the the towel, one hand stroking down steve’s freckled back while the baby dozes on his stomach
they leave a few days later, eventually making rounds to see mrs. henderson and mrs. sinclair - steve was very popular with them for being such a good babysitter, okay - and then the wheelers (they’d just stopped by while nancy fetched them a gift she’d left for them there, and karen wheeler almost has a heart attack when she sees billy standing there with a baby bag holding steve’s hand, as if nancy had made the whole thing about them up)
but she thinks it’s so cute? but when she starts poking nancy about baby fever nancy’s shoving them all back into the car with pink-tinged cheeks
then finally they see the harringtons, where they have a somewhat awkward ‘family’ meal very reminiscent of the christmas dinner a few years back when steve had introduced billy as his boyfriend and not his roommate
and steve’s mother insists she’ll watch the baby for the night, so billy and steve stay out at hopper’s old cabin (now technically jane’s place and secondary headquarters around the holidays, but everyone knows they want the privacy for you know what and won’t stop teasing them about it the next day)
steve gets his brains fucked out on the fold-out sofa twice and they’re both so loud and dirty-talking unabashedly like they used to do pre-baby and they sleep so heavy… then the next morning (they sleep in for once) steve drills into billy against the kitchen counter after opening him up in the shower with his fingers and tongue (they’re good boys and clean up before they leave of course)
they go back home and it’s so sad seeing everyone go but now they’ve all got pics from jonathan’s camera and promise to come back for christmas, then steve makes everyone swear they’ll come out to cali at least once (billy’s just thinking about how the hell everyone’s gonna fit at their place)
steve really gets the blues on the way back, but smiles when billy assures him with a kiss to the forehead that they’ll see everyone again soon, and that regardless of where they are, they know they’ve got a great support system, available anytime they need them
(extra: yngwie is so happy when they got home (he’s been staying with a neighbor) that he knocks billy backwards onto the lawn and stands on top of him, slathering him with slobber and steve has to set the baby carrier down when yngwie jumps on him and does the same thing)
