Because avatars seem to kinda have to go in order, and it takes more effort to go further back. Aang in the comics severed his connection to Roku and that kind of fucked it off.

Or maybe it wasn’t so bad because Sonam chose to be absent herself? If it did though, it might explain why nobody remembered Wan.

I feel like Gems go “corrupt”, or turn into monsters, when they force a regeneration too quickly and too often. As we saw in the newest episode, Reformed, Amethyst rushed her regeneration and came out... not good. Wrong? I don’t know. Anyways, she rushed her regeneration and didn’t regenerate correctly.

Which would explain why there are a lot on earth. During the rebellion, a lot of gems must have “poofed”. However, neither side could easily get reinforcements from the Gem Homeworld (or other planets?) because it would have taken way too long. Therefore, every time a Gem “poofed” they’d have to regenerate quickly too get back into the fight (or maybe to avoid capture by the enemy?). They’d also have to regenerate into forms that were more efficient in combat against other Gems.

Also, I wouldn’t put it past Homeworld Gems like Jasper to force regeneration on other soldiers when they weren’t winning, and also to force them to do it quickly.

So, maybe the Crystal Gems are capturing the corrupted Gems... to give them time to regenerate and return to their old selves...
