MONARCHY by Carolyn Agee
Evening wraps itself around me like a bolt of indigo silk, a crisp breeze teasing through the boxwoods. Two men walk abreast on the pavement at an eyes on-cell-phone pace. My step, too, unabated-- I will not accede to cedar shavings and splinter my sandal shod feet-- ever onward toward the inexorable collision, until I speak a demure, “excuse me”. As I hear the epithet under your breath, I wonder if I am the first woman not to defer and lift your train in your wake.
