Review/The Tourist
Just finished reading The Tourist by Olen Steinhauer and no, this is not about the movie with Johnny Depp. This is a spy novel which is something that I seldom read because I simply can't understand what they are talking about. Think The Bourne Supremacy, all the terms used in the book was just too confusing. I don't watched enough American dramas to be informed about the CIA and FBI. (ˇ_ˇ) So back to this book, it started out as a really typical kind of book (well at least for me), the government, scandals and dirty jobs, I was close to giving up at half of the book but since I need to kill time during work, I continued with the book. Luckily, it was a good choice because the book got interesting at the back! Milo Weaver has been framed and had to find the truth and clear his name. Who can he trust? How is he going to get physical evidence? What can he do to prove his innocence to his wife and daughter? With a twist at the people whom he can trust and more uncertainties, it is a good read overall! Talking about books, make me think of the 50 book challenge which I wanted to do at the start of 2013. But I think Ii sort of failed.... SO, I'm back with another 50 Book challenge for 2014 and hopefully I can hit my target! And I will be doing book review for each book that I've done in order to train my writing skills. Haha. So a short post for a book that I've just read and hopefully more post to come in the future. Review/Jane Eyre
I was quite shocked that I actually finished this book! But nonetheless, this is a book not to be missed. (Ok why does it sound like some advert HAHA) I'm never a literature person, because I can't simply understand the language, themes and motifs. Shakespeare is my biggest enemy. Ok maybe Roald Dahl also... I think I kinda failed my literature a few times, opps. Therefore I was a little hesitant to start on "Jane Eyre", but then I saw that there was a movie with the same title so it shouldn't be that bad right? Hence I downloaded the ebook, thinking that I can just read the book when I'm on the train (to kill time instead of playing candy crush). The starting made me really angry at how Jane was treated in her family/relatives but then through there I could see that Jane was a tough girl. She made it through and went to Lowood institution and finally Thornfield hall. And here comes our Mr Rochester! (Think grumpy old man HAHA He's really not the prince charming type manzxzx) I thought that their language was really cute because they were so polite in every way and by that I meant, "Would you lend me your shoulder as a crutch?" and "Are you trying to drown me, Jane Eyre?" I was so amused by their dialogs in the book. We really lack courtesy nowadays sigh. So that's why I'm really drawn to this book and eventually I couldn't resist the temptation but to buy the hard copy book. (And it was for 5bucks only?) And that's a really good choice because I really like this book. I think it shows the strong and independent character of Jane Eyre. She is definitely someone that I want to look up to. I guess there might be similarities between this book and Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice? But I haven't read the book yet so I can't say anything about it. But this book opens up my mind to classics and I am willing to consider other classics as my reading option. Talking about that, I still have 3 classics on my bookshelf, oh no. Alice in the wonderland, Sherlock Holmes and the phantom of the opera... This book is really not so much on love even though there were quite a lot of description on Mr Rochester and Jane, but it's actually more on social class, religion, gender relations and feminism. I would totally take my time to read it through again! (That being said, I guess I would aim to clear my unread books before starting on this book again) HAHA and time to watch the movie and the drama online!
Review/The fault in our stars
Always heard how good was this book by other friends and made me wonder how good can this book be? Couldn't afford to buy this book and hence end up borrowing from my friend.
But oh well, throughout the 3/4 of the book, it felt like a chick lit/teenager book, but then things start to get serious at the back and i guess i have to agree with some of the points made in this book.
The part that struck me most was gus's death and how people started to post on his social media. Because of a recent encounter with such incident (well indirectly) i think i managed to really connect with hazel in the book. So after all, the book was alright? i guess. Perhaps i need to read his other books to really get hold of what John Green is trying to write. (because you need to understand an author via his best book, or his normal books) which often happen to me because i like to give authors many many chances before i really get pissed off and throw their books away(which is not so frequent)
So maybe I'll give a chance to john green again and try to see what kind of surprises he can give me, but all in all, after all the hype about his books, i guess this book didn't score pretty high in my list.
Some infinities are bigger than other infinities.
Review/
