I really want to try animation, but I don't know where to start. Do you know of any software that could help me start? Thank you for your time :D
Note: I am not a professional and thus am not qualified to be teaching the following material - this is just my opinion from personal experience; I am by no means an expert on this matter and you should probably take a professional’s advice over mine!
You don’t need fancy software to animate - sure good software can facilitate things, but you can start with anything – my first dabbles with animation were with MS Paint and Windows Movie Maker!Things you do need are: • some art skill - you’re drawing, after all • an eye for detail - real motion is v complicated • endless patience - prepare to spend hours of work for a second of animation • punching bag - for when (not if) you get frustrated
With 2D animation, yes, you do need some art skill. 3D not so much if you have your rigs made and ready for you. After that, animation is less about the software (software still matters, just not as much as you might think) and more about how you can replicate realistic (or toony - up to you) motion - the Twelve Principles of Animation is a good reference. All of them are important, but a few good ones to really nail down early on are Anticipation, Secondary/Overlapping Action, and Timing. For creature motion, nothing beats realistic reference like the real thing itself - watching the motion of animals or your own movements is great for posing and timing and stuff!
There’s also nothing wrong with drawing frames one by one and stringing them together on gifcreator.me or something (this is actually how “Bouncy Vee” was made). But if you’re looking for software, Flash/Adobe Animate (what I use) is a good starting point because there’s a ton of resources and tutorials about it you can use!More software I’ve heard of includes TVPaint (haven’t personally tried it - it’s french), and if you are made of money can afford to shell out some extra dollahs, you can look into Toon Boom - haven’t personally tried it, but apparently it’s the current meta in the professional world!
I'm new to the art world and was wondering how did you first start out? I'm decently experienced when it comes to sketching and such, but new when it comes to digital art. How long did it take you to get used to drawing on a tablet?
I actually started practicing art more diligently once I got a drawing tablet, but it is true at first it feels off and difficult to use since the place you’re putting the pen on isn’t where the lines are being drawn per se (unless you got a friggin cintiq).
It doesn’t really take that long to get used to it though, just keep practicing and doodling with it and you’ll get the hang of how it works compared to traditional art, different programs may help with how it feels and fiddling with the stabilizer is a good idea until you feel comfortable. When it comes to art itself I never really took any classes I’ve mostly been learning off the internet and tutorials and such you can find out there, I highly recommend checking out Ctrl+Paint if you’re looking for resources, it goes into a lot of topics and they’re great videos.
