In the original Japanese version of A Link to the Past, Link's uncle's dying words are "You are the princess's..." And his voice trails off. This is an inverse of the English version, which reads "Zelda is your..."

Regardless, I believe the end is the same. "Zelda is your only hope"/"Zelda is your destiny," as well as "You are the princess's only hope/You are the princess's destiny." Zelda is known to have a psychic connection with Link in this game, and in the context of the Hero is Defeated timeline, they share a destiny that has been left incomplete - to defeat Ganon. And honestly, either translation works perfectly in this context (and that of the comics/manga as well). They are both required to work together to defeat Ganon, as Zelda's knowledge and Light Arrows are a key to his destruction.

Listen. If you've seen my other blogs, you already know how crazy I am about these two (if my current multichap fic wasn't a clear enough indicator). There's so many different stories that feature them (and I mean the publishing at the time of release, NOT Oracles or ALBW as those are more than likely different pairs), and there's so much potential for how they end up. In a way, it feels like having so many possibilities of "what if this went differently," to the point that you can imagine exactly what they're like and their dynamic! Between ALttP, the various Mangas (all by different authors and artists), and Link's Awakening, we see so many facets of character. But at the root of it all, they're both just two kids who were forced to live through something terrible together— both with predestined roles to play whether they'd like it or not. When the Triforce wishes everything back to normal, they still remember losing everything even if it has been undone. It's no wonder that the next time they meet, it's in a dream world where that responsibility is either vanished or a lot easier to swallow (until the end, that is). But in the end, they still have to leave that world behind. :( Despite being the face of a perfect happy ending, where all the turmoil was undone, there's an intense bittersweetness surrounding these two (especially in the context of the Ishinomori comic's ending, which directly contrasts with Himekawa's). There's a certain theme of darkness surrounding them in ALttP (literally, for half of it), and it continuing to haunt them in the form of nightmares later on... Their souls are so intertwined it makes me sick (positive).

ALttP Zelda is the leader of the seven maidens once they take the title of Sages, but she actually wishes she could travel Hyrule and beyond much like Link. She has always cared a lot about her kingdom (to the point where she often assisted her father in royal matters when she was younger), but she wasn't allowed to go very far. This definitely worsens after the events of the game, but every so often she will disappear to a certain orchard.
