My Schizophrenia essay so far
The last paragraph should be how these two issues are related to each other. God, I wish I went to a non-charter school so that I could be in an advanced placement english...
p1. Schizophrenia is defined by doctors to be a mental disorder that makes it difficult to tell the difference between real life and “fantasy” experiences. It also makes it harder for the diagnosed to think logically, to have normal emotional responses, and to behave normally in any social situation. To complete a diagnosis, a psychiatrist would perform an evaluation based on an interview with both family members and the person to be diagnosed; however, other than the clinical symptoms presented, a psychiatrist cannot depend on a physical or lab because there is not a test that can diagnose schizophrenia. What scientists are sure about is that people who have family members with schizophrenia may be more likely to get the illness themselves. Schizophrenia may also be triggered by a person’s environment. Schizophrenia usually begins in young adulthood (late teens); however, there are cases that show the disorder begins over the age of 45. Both men and women can suffer from the disorder. Types of schizophrenia, based on symptoms, are paranoid schizophrenia, disorganized (or hebephrenic) schizophrenia, catatonic schizophrenia, residual schizophrenia, and undifferentiated schizophrenia. Schizophrenia, being the enigmatic disorder that it is, has no permanent treatment. The best a patient can do is take antipsychotic medications.
p2. Suicide is among one of the difficult situations that have taken over the youth of America. Although highly preventable, it still happens at an alarming rate. According to research by the National Center for Health Statistics,
Nationally, the suicide rate increased 3 percent from 11.2 suicides per 100,000 population in 2006 to 11.5 in 2007. The rate has fluctuated since 2000, ranging from a low of 10.4 in 2000 to a high of 11.5 in 2007, with a mean rate of 11.0. The 2007 suicide rate is the highest since 1995.
With highly sensitive youth being tormented for the simplest things, it is no wonder why teen suicide is at a high. In the Fall of 2010, at least six gay teenagers decided to kill themselves after being tormented by fellow peers. In fact, in May 2010, a poll hosted by Gallup showed that 43 percent of Americans still believe that being gay is “morally wrong”. If being born, due to genetics, gay is an issue, how would people view those that are ill to the point of psychosis?
